05 4.7 V8 with 50-Series SUV Flowmaster Video

I bought a 50 Series SUV Flowmaster 2.5" center/offset online ($119 shipped)

Had a shop install it
Cut off old resonator
Attach a new bent piece
Install a double walled 2.5" angled tip
Mounted a new hanger closer to the axle (so tip was where I wanted it)

Cost for install was $110
So roughly $230 total

Here's a video. I tried to incorporate reving it 6ft from the tip and a road trip with windows up/down. I took it all in one shot so it kinda sucks (and I'm no video man either). The road noise from other vehicles is off the chain b/c I just got off work and there's tons of traffic....including a freakin' Ambulance. It gets loud towards the end of the video so you've been warned lol

Works fine for me, appreciate the post. I was thinking of something similar (esp the resonator delete and the bend) and this sounds great. I wouldn't mind hearing your thoughts after you've had it for a bit regarding drone on the highway. Probably nothing a little Led Zep couldn't cover anyway :guitar2:

Its been in for almost 300 miles. Flowmasters will 'break in' but not as much as a Magnaflow (IMO). The Flowmaster is all metal inside with a rat's maze of welded partitions. And its apparent that 70mph is louder than 60mph or 80mph but I think this is true for all muffler choices in my set up (to some extent). These 4Runners are not the whisper quite vehicle of the industry anyways lol.

The Magnaflow is a straight through design with some sort of fiberglass sound deadening material stuffed inside the body of the muffler. This is why they have low resonance. But, that material will slightly deteriorate over time. So they do tend to get louder. Actually, I've seen a 5 year old Magnaflow that was rusted at the connection of the outlet pipe and the body of the muffler. And that's a California muffler. Might of been an anomaly but, never the less, it was way rusted out and done for.

And the biggest reason I choose Flowmaster.....ever since I was a kid, my dad built hot rods for fun and we always put Flowmasters on them (more like 40-Series though.....loud). What can I say......I like the sound......just like I like Led Zep!

Very nice! I'd also like some input on noise at highway speeds. My last rig was a 96 Mustang Cobra, v8 + no cats + 40 series Flowmasters would get old on trips and such after a while. Also, any noticeable difference in throttle response/power?

Well that Mustang sounds loud as hell! No cats....40-series....whoa!

There was a performance gain for sure. I have a K&N filter replacement in there too and both bumped things up nicely.....figure less than $300 for both and I got 8-15hp at the crank (yes I know its a huge window but I'm pretty sure I landed somewhere in-between lol)

Before purchasing the muffler, I read a bunch of info on the subject. Sadly, tons of the material I found is V6 based and its like comparing oranges to tangerines (at best). I read a lot about people's worries of highway resonance so I found myself paying attention to it more than I should have. I can honestly say that I am content with the 'drone' I heard as I went OCD for a day or two. There's more wind noise than exhaust noise. But, in general, I always got the tunes on (just lower volume in my older days lol) so I hear nothing when cruising but it will open up nicely when I accelerate.
 
Good deal, really makes me consider it now. I've been meaning to get the tailpipe mod done for quite a while, just haven't yet. Trying to decide on the muffler first. In a way, I enjoy the quietness of the stock exhaust, but in another way I miss the sound of my Cobra. Any noticeable difference in gas mileage?
 
Ive been waiting almost 4 years to hear a 4.7 4runner with a 50 series!!(sorry if i missed others) I love it....im sold!! Had true dual 50's on my Titan and loved them, loud but not a super 40! I had a straight pipe option for the strip and humiliating any f-150, ram 1500 or silverado 1500!!

I haven't really considered changing my exhaust cuz i wasn't pleased with any V8 exhaust tones but after hearing the 50 series, im reconsidering! I like your set up with just replacing the muffler with a new bent tail pipe with a nice lookin tip! Looks and sounds great!! :thumb3:
 
Sounds awesome. How's the droning at about 55 mph and 78 mph? I had a Magnaflow briefly, too much droning for me. In fact, it was almost unbearable for a guy not used to high flow mufflers. Good video! Wish I could ride in it in person!
 
That actually sounds pretty sweet. More rumble than my Magnaflow, but I have the full size model.
 
I'm glad I am able to help some of you guys hear a 50 SUV for the first time. I am happy with it for sure.

Drone isn't that bad. Its there in comparison to the whisper quite stock saw dust filled muffler lol But I have no complaints. I am use to louder exhaust so I may not be a good enough judge for people's tastes in exhaust resonance.

I kinda always liked the straight pipe out the back, i think its looks a little more aggressive. But I really never payed much attention to other years stock tips so who knows
 
Sounds great...wish I had a V8. I'm afraid if I put any type of exhaust on my V6 it would sound like a little Honda street car.

They do sound quite different. If I had the V6, I would have just done the side dump. Some like the stock out the back exhuast but I hated it. Looks like some motorized adult toy....lmao. I will post a before and after pic so you guys can see mine. I had no chrome tip and it looked like two types of metal....pathetic.
 
sounds good on the v8, if only u put the super 44 on it, itll scream louder, i have the 4.0 v6 and have the super 44, its deeper and louder than the cherry bomb vortex i had.
