'05 4Runner dash lights flickering?

Directly above the fan/temp controls where the gas mileage is displayed, etc the light seems to flicker sometimes and often the passenger side will go dimm, but the light from the driver side area stays on. It makes me thing it's a bulb going bad in that section, but is there a bulb or is it the display going bad?

How hard is this to take apart? If it's a bulb, toyota will charge me for labor and parts ($155.00), but if it's the display they will cover under extended warranty. I'm willing to take it apart if I can find directions on how to do this.

I have had the exact same problem except it is on the drivers side display. The screen above the fan controls would turn on and off on the drivers side. I believe it is an LED because someone on the forum took apart there whole dash and changed all the lights from orange to white. I will post the link when I have the chance to look for it.

Hes not referencing any of the lights in your picture.

Hes talking about the display right above the HVAC controls, thats shows the gas mileage, etc.
 
2005 here also - I had to replace my bulb last year on the Driver's side fan control dial/knob/thingy.

THIS IS AN EASY (5 MIN) JOB YOU CAN DO IN THE DRIVEWAY YOURSELF!!!

I am not a skilled mechanic, but I am willing to take my time. This is very easy to do - I would suggest you not pay Toyota the bucks. The bulb is pricey for how small it is (you will probably have to get it from the Toyota parts counter).

Someone on the forum here descibes how to add an IPOD adapter - I think - and it is in these directions (with great diagrams) you will be able to access the HVAC controls.

Search for it. Save the green.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply to the issues my 4Runner Limited is having with the lights above the HVAC controls. One thing I was worred about is taking it all apart! I thought the entire unit from the radio to the HVAC controls was going to have to come out to replace the LED's above the HVAC controls. That is not the case, right? I hope not. Toyota wanted $155 if it was a bad bulb, so that to me sounded like about 1 1/2 hours labor and then parts added in.

Please let me know.

I think I have more details that may help everyone having this problem. Toyota faxed me the diagram on the info lcd display above the HVAC controls. From what they said there are two bulbs behind the info display at $5/each. It's section "C" in the diagram. This would figure right if my passenger side display is only going dimm sometimes. I plan to take it apart tonight before going to Toyota and having them charge me for something that is not going to be covered under warranty.

Just thought you all would like to know. I would probably attach the diagram if that would help, but the link in this page is much better.

I'm not going to the dealership Sat. morning because the bulb is not under warranty. I replaced the bulb in about 10 min max. The cost of the bulb was $5/each at the Toyota dealer. I tried Radio Shack as some mentioned, but they did not have that size bulb and if they did I'd be worried about using it against that control board if it's not exactly right. The other posts about taking the HVAC area apart is very true about pulling on it until you hear the pop. I thought I cracked it, but it was just coming unsnapped from the back on the top and bottom. There are two hooks on the top and bottom. So all is well and the new bulb is in. It's very easy and all you need to do is look at the diagrams posted on this link.

This site is such a big help! I did a bulb replacement yesterday as the left-side of my screen had gone dim. I had doubted how easy it would be, but with my daughter helping it was a sub 5-min project to take apart and put back together. If anyone needs it Part#: 90010-09017, Description: SB10B4 Bulb, Bulb Cost: $3.43, Not having Wife nag me: Priceless.
 
drinkin40s, where did u buy the wedge bulbs? ive bought several from different sellers, & none has been as bright as the factory ones.
 
I purchased one right from the toyota dealer. That is the part number and description. I only did 1 of them, never thought about the potential of them being different brightnesses (word?). Anyway it is identical to the other bulb.

if your talking about the lcd screen (clock), it uses 2 neo-wedge bulbs, 1 each side. theyre easy to replace, but the factory toyota bulbs are much brighter than any cheap aftermarket or led bulbs ive tried. thanks drinkin40 for posting bulb #.

I have had the same problem here - it gets worse when it is COLD outside. Anyways, I asked the Toyota parts counter for the bulbs - and I was told I had to replace the entire display!!! HAHAHA!!!
 
Time to do the same here. All the same symptoms, light flickering on left side of display, worse as it gets colder etc etc. Guess I know what I'll be doing next weekend.

Thank you very much!! This along with Bull Dogs thread saved me a few bucks and made the wife very happy!!
