05 JBL to 06 JBL, maybe not !!!

05 JBL OEM to 06 JBL OEM, maybe not !!!

Guys I finally found a 06 jbl 6 disk OEM to replace my 05 JBL OEM. I received it in the mail and everything looked great. I was so excited to swap out the 05 for the 06, figuring it would be really easy to do.....WRONG.

It seems the 06 will not fit perfectly like the 05 did. Its a quarter of an inch off. I think the problem is in the brackets that hold the head unit in place. The 05 brackets will fit on the 06 but it puts the 06 head unit a little bit more recessed into the dash.

I think there are two solutions to this problem:

1. Call Toyota and order 06 mounting brackets, which Toyota will say, "ahhhh what are u talking about, we don't sell that..."

2. Use the 05 mounting brackets and re screw them into the 06 unit, placing it in the correct position.

Anyway thought I would share my thoughts on this because I know that several 05 owners are switching to the 06 for mp3 and Sirius sat. tuner hook up.

Also I have made sure that I put the dash and head unit back correctly. I have taken apart the dash of my 4runner many times and I'm pretty sure I know were everything goes.

Any thoughts ?

UPDATE

Ok I fixed the problem. After being pissed off all day at the mall with my wife and kid I came home and solved this frustrating problem.

One word "Dremel" !!!

The best way to fix the problem is to re-drill some extra holes in the metal brackets that hold the radio in the dash.

I decided to dremel four new holes that adjusted the position of the radio in the dash, moving it out about 1/4 of an inch.

You also have to smooth out three small posts on each side that helped support the radio against the metal brackets. ( you don't need these posts, there are 4 strong screws that hold the radio to the metal brackets on each side)

The fix took about 15-30 mins. but mostly because I didn't have the right tools to drill the holes. (I tried to use my hands to hold the metal pieces while I was drilling thru them).

I attached a picture of the finished product. All I can say is MP3 capability is the coolest. I put one disk in the stereo containing 128 songs, I don't even need to figure out the Ipod adapter.

I did not have to drill any holes for mine. Mine is a *little* recessed in the dash ... but it looks like it was supposed to be that way.

Ya, the 06 did fit a little recessed which for some reason kept bugging me as I was looking at it. I'm kind of a perfectionist which sucks sometimes because it causes me to spend time fixing little things that don't make too much of a difference.

I measured the 05 with the metal brackets on it and then I measured the 06 with the brackets. The 05 stuck out 1/2 of an inch longer then the 06.

So if you ever want to make your 06 flush with the trim just PM me and I will give you my phone number and tell you in more detail how I did it. I love it now because it's flush with the bottom trim.

By the way, any luck with the Aux port adapter, or installing the Sirius tuner yet ?

I know you are always on the forefront of this and are great about sharing with the group.

I think I figured out which wires I need to tap into to make the aux work. I plan on ordering the aux adapter as soon as I can get some free time. It is #2 on my to-do list behind tearing out my kitchen cabinets and puttin up new ones (which I am sure I will screw up somehow...).

What are the benefit's of the 06 unit over the 05 ? I just have the six disk prem. DJ code unit . w/6 speaker's. Can I swap out to a JBL without any problem's ?
