05 SE V8 slight bucking at stop lights?

Today I was driving and going about 40mph. The stop light started to change and I applied the brake. I didn't brake hard but I wasn't far enough away to be able to coast to the light either. I noticed that about 15 or so seconds after I stopped that my truck "bucks" a little bit forward. It seems to only happen when I am going somewhat fast and braking suddenly. Is this just pent up energy that the brakes are absorbing or something? It doesn't do it if I am not driving fast so I don't think there is anything wrong. Any thoughts or does this happen to everyone? I didn't notice this on my V6 so unsure if this is a V8 issue.

It's the driveshaft (propeller shaft) causing that "clunk". It's been discussed in many threads. Most of us address the problem by greasing it. A few have had the dealership replace the driveshaft. I've adapted my braking so that I would brake a bit harder initially, then I would ease up to the stopping point (i.e.- get the revs down before edging forward the last 15 ft or so and coming to a complete stop. I hope that makes sense). If I'm doing any hard braking, I usually put it in Neutral to relieve the stress. I put it back in Drive after making a complete stop. Greasing the driveshaft helps quite a bit, but doesn't really get rid of the problem.

My 04 V-6 does this as well. Lubing the driveshaft did not seem to make a difference. I just hold my foot on the brake harder now at stoplights!

I did a search for "bucking" but it didn't bring up much. I guess I needed to go a better search. I will be taking it into the dealer in a week or so for an oil change and for them to look at the drivers seat that keeps moving that everyone has problems with. I might have them take a look at this too. Thanks all.

Possibly the brake booster needs some time to recharge and lessens brake pressure momentarily? I think this was discussed before but not 100% sure...

Like Hank said. Dealer isn't going to do anything about this, he can't. It comes with the 4runner for no additional charge. It will wear in, just lube the six zerts on your drive line every oil change.

The service manager at the dealership here has said that if greasing the propeller shaft does not fix it, then they have been instructed by Toyota to polish the drive shaft with emery cloth. Apparently the root cause is a bit of roughness on the shaft.

I hear what your saying John but I wouldn't want them touching my drive shaft. I had a 1995 Landcruiser with over 140K miles on it when I traded it and it thumped every now and then from the time I bought it till I sold it and I've talked to other FZJ80 owners with over 200K miles on their LC's and they experienced the samething. It is not a problem to be fixed. It is built into the design and will never cause you to have a breakdown. Having Toyota tech's mess with your truck can lead to future problems and breakdowns :) JMHO

Just curious. If there are 6 zerks on the V8 then how many on a V6?

No problem. When I had mine in last time for service, I asked that they be sure to grease it well and it made a big difference. That's when the service manager told me what Toyota's instructions were.

I ask that mine is greased every OCI, but the service techs at my dealer never find all of the zerts. Last time they found 2 zerts. If I'm lucky mine gets all of the grease every 12K miles since I do the OCI every 3750 miles. I can imagine that the owners that don't ask ever get their zerts greased. I bet money that as long as you don't take your 4runner through deep enough water to submerge the drive shift that you can go forever without it being greased.

Sounds like the A/C kicked in and surged the idle.

That's exactly what I was going to post. When I'm stopped at a light, and my A/C kicks in, my 4Runner lurches forward and I have to apply more pressure to the brakes to keep from moving. My V6 never did this, so it must have something to do with the extra HP/torque of the V8.

Ok, I guess I will ask the question. In laymans terms, what the hell is a zert? Should I just not even mention this to the dealer as I don't want them screwing something up in the future. The driver set movemen has stopped for now so I am not going to bring that up at the moment. I will be going in for an oil change next week.

My V-6 does this too!

It is a small metal nipple where the grease is inserted on the drivetrain. What will happen is that based on the position of the drivetrain some zerts will be easy to get too for greasing and others will be hard to get too. What they will do is lube the easy ones and forget the hard to reach zerts. Odd's are if you tell them too write on the service order and tell the lube monkey that you want all 6 of your zerts lubed every time you go in for a oil/filter change then the odds are that you might get them all lubed every 10K miles, if you are lucky. But don't count on it, I've stood there and had them wipe down the joints and lube 2 Zerts and tell me that is all they could find  . I honestly think that the drivetrain can go 100K miles without having these zerts greased as long as you don't submerge the drivetrain. Otherwise there would be real problems based on the skill level of the lube monkeys. Good luck.

It's ZERK!

not Zert.

Thanks, I've been spellin it wrong forever. As long as we all understand its the little tit thinge that you put grease in. I understand that Einstein couldn't spell worth a shit either :)

Try this one...

Dzuse

Yes it is an automotive thing, and no, not many know how to say it.

Since I have the driveshaft problem also, I will now go out and greaze my zorks.
