I have an 05 SE 4x4 with V8. After i stop and let off the brakes i hear a loud clunking sound as if one of the brakes did not release with the others. It is definetly in combination with the brakes as this is when i hear it and at no other time. It does not happen all the time but at least 3 out of every 10 stops. Any ideas or anyone with this same problem. I am taking it to the dealer Friday but just wanted to see if this is an ongoing problem.

Hot Rod, odds are it's the drive shaft. I have a newly purchased 2003 SR5 V-8 and a few starts and stops after buying it I heard and felt the same thing. Having owned a few chevys I immediately remembered it from then. Either go to your dearler and have them lube ALL the fittings (about 9-11, can't remember) or you can do it yourself. Easy job, it will take longer to jack up your truck and put down the stands than to do it. good luck, CSM-H

This is a well-known phenomenon which afflicts many 4X4 trucks.
What's happening is the slip yokes that allow the drive line to shorten and lengthen are binding when you create a little axle wrap by using the brakes. When you stop, the binding lets go and the "thump" occurs.
My '98 'Runner did this if I missed lubing the slip yokes at my 6K mile oil changes, and so did my '03. Lube the slip yokes and it'll go away. Break-in of the slip yokes apparently plays a part in loosening them up as well.
Toyota used to recommend NGLI 2 grease with Molybdenum disulfide for the slip yokes, and I found that works well. I'm currently using a Valvoline synthetic grease with Moly added and haven't heard the "thump" for a couple of years now.

I am convinced that mine will never go away. Each year I jam six slugs of grease in that slip joint with no avail. Eighteen slugs so far.
