05 Spoiler vs. 04 Spoiler

Does anyone wonder why Toyota changed the design for the wing on the new 05 Runners?

Is it me or are the wings on the 03 and 04 Runners look better?

Supposedly the new design have improved airflow. To clear the rear window and also less drag.

Dont really notice a difference to be honest. The little hump looks fine.

Guess I have to get used to it. Im just used to the older ones I guess. Its more sleek to me.

Here is the 05 Spoiler. If you notice the lip on the top, that is the difference. I can tell you, it does create strong air flow at low speeds. I noticed it when I had left snow the roof and seen the snow being blown down the back of the vehicle, at very low speeds (5mph). The mod may have been done to help keep fume out of open rear window. I have not had the fumes problem so far.

it'll create a stronger air flow down the back.. but IMO, it looks way out of place and a little too big!

The picture I posted dramatizes the spoiler (up close); if you see them side by side it doesn't look "way out of place". It is just like anything else, people resist change and if you already have something you will like it better. To be honest, at first I wasn't that crazy about it, but now I like it better.

I personally prefer the 2k3/2k4 spoiler but maybe I'm biased:

Here is a picture of Mark86's truck and his parents 2005 Limited:

I have seen them side by side and when you step back from the vehicle.. all I see is that huge spoiler in the back... its not even in line with the roof! Its a big piece that basically come from the roof line to the top of the roof racks.

just not for me.

I guess I would feel the same way if I had a 04. Personally I feel it distinguishes the 05.

Does anyone really know if these spoilers, either the '03-'04 or '05 versions, are all that effective at blowing snow or dust off the rear window, or keeping the exhaust from blowing in??

I ask because I'm in the "butt-ugly" camp -- I really think the styling of these spoilers sux big time -- especially the '05 version. But all the 4Runners in my area come with it, so I had no choice. I'd like to get rid of it and plug the holes with caps, painted to color match. I think the four caps would still look better than that hideous spoiler. Of course, this is just my opinion.

As for the brake light, I could live without it, and I don't think it would be a safety issue. Or I could add the stock brake light, but it sounds like that could be a bit pricey.

So getting back to my question, are these spoilers form or function? I'm sure they help to blow off the rear window, but is it significant? Anyone had experience with and without the spoiler? Thanks...

I agree that I wasn't real impressed with the spoiler when I bought it but it's grown on me. Now I think it would look completely naked without it back there. Just another thing that distinguishes the T4R from other SUV's IMO.

Well, of course these styling questions are always very opinionated, but for what it's worth, the 2005 4Runner brochure does not have a single picture of the spoiler. Not a one. Doesn't look like Toyota.com does either. For what it's worth.

The spoiler does clear up the back window and it all depends on which way the wind is blowing. If you driving towards the wind... it'll help alot more than if the wind is coming in from the sides.

IMO, a 4runner without the spoiler does look naked. I've seen a couple of those around and it just looks.... odd. Maybe because I've seen so many more with the on.
