05 Sport stock stereo question

Is it just me or does it seem to lack all but the slightest tinge of Bass... and the treble is distant and almost tinny. I haven't bought one yet but on the 5-6 test drives I've been on they all sound like this. The stock unit in my camry sounds way better.. has anyone noticed this? I'm by no means an audiophile or even a veteran but I know what sounds good and this doesn't. Is this the head unit, or speakers or a combination of?

When I do indeed get one It seems like I'll need to get a new system in there or something... though if I can remain without the epxense of a new one that would be best.

come on is this an issue for anyone else? Am I crazy or do you guys notice it?
I think I'll probably just get a new system and speakers installed.. seems to be the best way for me to get exactly what I want out of it. But thats a thread for the audio area.
 
Stereo preference is a really personal thing....what sounds good to someone else's ears may not sound good to you.

It doesn't really matter if we think it sounds good or not.... If it's not up to your standards; to the point where you want to mod it, is any of us saying "I think it sounds fine" going to make you take a 180 and go "oh ok, I guess it's great" ??

There is huge room for improvment on basically any stock stereo system out there, the 4Runner's is no exeception :)
 
With my 4runner I think it has to much bass for a stock system. I turn the base to -4 when listening to the FM. IMO i hate the stock system. That's gonna be my next mod. New HU and Speakers. Be great if we got the scion HU as stock.
 
well when I was on my last test drive I flicked on the radio and the sound compared to my camry is totally different. But of course it could have something to do with speaker placements and also the acoustics inside of the runner are way different than those in the camry just due to interior space, and shape and all. My camry I'm happy with the stock system so I won't need to change it, nor have I ever felt the desire to. But thats the first thing I noticed was the sound is all messed up to my ears.

The real point of this thread was to see what the general concensus was.. because it could have just been some other variable I am not thinking of and if everyone thinks the stock sucks well then its not just me but the system itself. In which case I would be affirmed on my decision to replace it, since it is not a cheap thing to do.
 
I'm very pleased with the stock stereo. But then again I'm used to a 14 year old stock MR2 stereo :D (which is pretty good too in my opinion)
 
Was it the JBL system? Mine is the non-JBL. Stock sound is not very good. I never listened to the JBL system.
 
I got the 10spk JBL and I have to say that I am quite impressed. The sound quiality is much much better than the system I spent thousand upgrading in my old Acura.
 
I assume you were test driving a 4r without the JBL, from what ive read on this site the stock system sucks. If you want a better sound go with the JBL, it sounds good to me and i didnt want the hassle and extra expense of adding a custom system.
 
You need to turn the bass up to the max, the trebble down, and then shift quite a bit of the sound to the rear of the vehicle. When you do that, it will balance out. The default settings are horrible. It took me about 3 days to figure out how to get it set up correctly.
 
Yes, the stock base stereo sucks. Do a search for "Scion" It has been discussed to death. A lot of people here just replace the stock HU with the stock one from a scion and it makes a world of difference and it is cheap. Under $100.
 
It depends on what type of music you listen to also...

I have the non-JBL stock, and I've gotten used to it a bit, but contrary to Ben's comments, I turned the Bass to "0" and the Treble +1 or +2. Fader '0' as well.

I have an excletic mix of music but everything from Hard Rock to Funk to Club to Dave Matthews sounds the best it can with these settings. The Bass isn't as 'tight' as I like it, but it works for me.

But, I am also awaiting my new Scion 1804 unit (should be here on Monday). I bought it off eBay for $90 shipped. Plus I got the Ipod2car patch kit. So by next week I hope to have a system that keeps me happy awhile.

Based on the reviews, I found that the Scion would be a big, big improvement. It sounds like a great bang for the bucks. I'll keep you posted.

I'm all over with my music... hard rock, soft rock, industrial, classical... mostly its stuff with strong bass tracks i.e a bass, and drums type of thing. No rap or anything so get me straight I'm not looking for that bumping bass thing. Please keep my posted on that scion HU, if that works better than so be it... I'll get one of them. thanks for the input guys.
 
Also with the JBL make sure the center channel is turned on.

If it's turned off, the whole system sounds like crap.
 
Is there a way to turn the center channel on and off?? If so, I have yet to discover it..


Also ---- What's everyone's take on the "surroung on/off" feature on the JBL system? Its hard for me to tell if it is really doing much to the sound.
 
I should probably also mention that I have the JBL 10 speaker setup. That probably makes a difference in the audio setup vs. the standard system.
 
sorry, I mean the surround sound not center channel.

It really does make a difference if you turn it off.

I know when I first got mine, I was playing around with it, and turned it off. It sounded horrible all the bass response I had was gone, and the highs became very muffled.
 
BenSD...thanks for noting that you have JBL...

I went out after work the other day and tried your settings on mine (non-JBL) and thought for sure you had a "screw loose" - the stereo sounded so bad!

I make sense, now that I see you have a JBL - - "whew!"

BTW...my Treble setting is actually "+5".

Still patiently waiting in the Scion - hopefully, today.
