05+ V8 Mainfolds - Pacesetter

Hello everyone,

So my cracked manifold(s?) are getting to the point of extreme embarrassment after taking a long highway stroll throughout the mountains. It’s time that I do something in order to fix this. I do have a welder who has assured me that he would be able weld these while still being mounted (depending where the crack is) & I will take him up on his offer in the meantime. I am not ready or willing to break the bank with another set of factory OEM’s only to have this happen again. I am well over the 100k factory free replacement offered by Toyota.

However, we all know that Pacesetter is offering headers for the 03-04 V8. I have decided to contact them with persistence indicating that there is a high demand for an alternative to OEM. Seeing as though they are the ONE company out there that has produced these for our earlier year V8 4Runner. I did not hesitate to push for the later years to be taken into concern for production. Even if this means that all that can be offered is a aftermarket manifold. This would hopefully still be a cheaper alternative than OEM manifolds.

My inquiry is now sitting with Pacesetter R&D as well as their Product Manager and GM. As soon as I hear back from them, I will advise on their response. I do hope no one has already contacted recently :/

There is still hope that Pacesetter will take this into consideration and add this to their manifold cat converter line.

You'll be fine running the 03-04 manifold just need to get a module that mimics air injection - ask Keith at Dirty Deeds, he knows which module it is and where to get it.

From what I understand the air injection only functions for the first 15-30 sec after ignition and the module just mimics the signal thereby allowing you to block off the ports and use headers or manifolds designed for the 03-04 engines.
 
Yea, this air injection is what fails on the Tundra and dealers want thousands to do the repair. What a PITA it is to have that crap to deal with.

For what its worth, I inspected my manifold thoroughly and there were no signs of cracking that could have been welded. I think it was leaking from the flange itself.
 
Over the 100K factory free replacement offered by Toyota?? Isn't it 7 years or 100K miles? Whichever comes first?

You'll need the bypass for the AIP system as someone else stated. There are 2 ways to bypass, there is a fix using some resistor and a relay and then there is a guy on the tundra forums who sells a solid state module that wires into the sensor harness. The AIP runs when the engine is cold and is in a standby mode the rest of the time. The module intercepts the sensor signal and renders the AIP in a permanent standby mode. The second portion of the fix is to block off the air tubes where the AIP system attaches to the exhaust. The guy who sells the module sells block off plates that seal the system. I'll be posting a writeup in the coming week or two on the install. The module and block off plates run about $250. You'll still pass emissions after installing them (assuming everything else is operating as intended) and it takes about 30 mins to wire up.

It isn't a cheap module but it is much cheaper than replacing failing valves and pumps for the AIP system which is why I got it.

Thanks for this info! This is way cheaper than buying the OEM manifold from Toyota for $800-$1100 depending on your area, excluding the mani gaskets. The Pacesetter manifold is running at about $240 +/- a side at Amazon & I believe they come with the manifold gaskets. Include the module at $250, that’s a much better alternative. Is there a way to tell if the module is working in case it decides to fail without causing damage to the AIP valves & pumps? I assume the engine will simply not fire if the AIP has failed? Are the 03-04 pipes the same length & bolt up to the cat without any modifications?

I’m a still waiting to hear back from Pacesetter in the meantime with both fingers crossed.

The AIP is a completely separate system from the engine and the only impact it can have is as follows:

1. if the AIP valves or pumps fail they're going to throw trouble codes, most of the time these codes can be cleared w/ a OBDII reader
2. if a pump fails and you get a code starting with a '0' then you'll need to replace whatever part failed BEFORE you can clear the code.
3. there's one code that will put the engine in limp mode. it can also be cleared (or unhook battery for a few mins).

I know some folks are running the pacesetters on '05 and up w/ the bypass and blockoff plates. I think that's all they had to do. There's some post on it around here somewhere.

Hello all, I'd like some more information if you guys have it.

I am working on a friends 2006 4Runner V8 limited. I have removed the stock manifolds and gaskets due to a clear leak on the front passenger port and an audible leak (that I can't visually verify) on the drivers side. I had already purchased the Amazon manifolds with intent to use "block off plates" as mentioned in this thread as I have successfully used such measures in GM product installs. However, after removing the manifolds this appears to be MUCH more involved than simply blocking off the tube that goes into the manifold from the back/top of the engine. That tube feeds another "mini" log-style manifold that in turns goes back into 4 additional ports on the side of the head, that feed back into the main exhaust ports. The pacesetters for the 03/04 4Runner V8s don't cover these small ports at all - leaving a wide open exhaust leak if not closed off. Are there block off plates for these as well? Where can I get them at?

Any help appreciated, I'd like to get this back together asap.

For all those with '06 and newer 4runners with the dreaded manifold leak...I found a product that worked...and it was cheap. I bought the part and brought it to my mechanic...all in I paid about $900. I think toyota wanted much more than that for just the part. Ticking noise gone, no emission warnings, and I'm back to loving my 4runner!! Below is my vehicle and the manifold options I found online. I bought the Doorman from partsgeek.com listed first below. I know they have the same part for the V6.

you can buy headers from Doug Thorley Headers now. $750 for the pair, weld on to existing y-pipe, ceramic coated, no more issues.
