"06 4R stock audio question

Hi there! long time reader first time poster. the site ie really helpfull especially making the right decision on getting a 4runner. i dont have one yet but very very very soon.
is the stock audio, 6 spkrs am/fm radio cassette, cd, for the 4 runner 2006 sport good enough? does it make a big difference if i switch to jbl?

Best way to tell if it is "good enough" is to sit and listen to one at a dealership. It is all subjective. Some people are audiophiles and can tell if you have to much treble. If you're asking if it is "good enough" you probably won't be too happy with the stock system :

Oh yeah, you can't switch to a JBL if your truck has the stock radio, but you can put in a SCION head unit that supposedly sounds much better.

If you're plans are to upgrade to a better sound system, go with the stock system as it is easier to rip it out and replace it.

There are 2 different 6 speaker system's

1 is a base system & one is listed as a Premium system. I have the Prem. sys. in mine and it's listed as option code "DJ".

It sounded differnt than the base system . At my dealer all the 6 cyl. had the base system and the V8's had the prem. system.

Mine has no cassette but has a 6 disk in dash changer with MP3/WMA playback capabilities.

As a car audio installer, your best option is to get the basic stock system and take it all out. I did this with mine and couldnt be happier. Stock speakers have paper cones and tend to rip or "blow" as people like to call it. This happens to spirted listens who demand high volume out of there stock speakers. Even though toyotas installs a factory crossover in the basic system it is very easy to blow espically when you crank the bass up. A good setup would be a head unit, something like Pioneer or Kenwood. Both very nice units. In the fron you have 3 1/2 inch tweeters with a 6x9 woofer. In the rear you have standard 6 1/2 tweeters. In the front i would spend more money on the tweeters becuase they reproduce more most of the music with the woofer taking care of most of the lower sounds, generally 120Hz or below. Pioneer and Kenwood make great speakers espically at lower price ranges. If you wish to spend a little more money look at JL Audio or Boston Acustics. i think ill stick with the basic stocl system and upgrade later. thanks for the suggestions, this will be my very first 4runner, hoping to get a best deal out of it. am eyeing for the sport edition, wish me luck, im goin' in today(toyota dealership) after 2 weeks of research.

i was in the same boat, i listened to the stock and jbl at the end i choose the stock and now currently installing a system.
i brought a pioneer 7700 head unit cause i have it in my diamante and love it, ma audio 2 10's sub box and ma audio amp not bad,
and diamond audio components 6 1/2 for the front and boston 6 1/2 speakers for the rear. that my set up to give u ideas.

I just gone done installing a new Alpine headunit w/ XM and iPod connectivity on my 06 SR5 with the base audio package. The sound improvement is nice, and I haven't even replaced the stock speakers yet. I spent maybe 2 hrs doing it, but only because it was my first time taking a 4th gen appart... I purposely didn't get the JBL audio just so I could put in what I wanted...

i've done it

i went home tonight with a 4R SE 4X4
but got the jbl 10spkrs instead. no complain, i love it!
my very first brand new truck.

Congrats! You won't regret your purchase. I'm on my 2nd 4Runner and like 5th toyota, and they've all been excellent cars!

Check to see what the option code say's . If it has no option code it's the stock 6 speaker system , If it say's potion code "DJ" it is the upgraded prem. system , then it goes up to the 10 speaker system and then to the 10 speaker /Nav sys.

That's a step above mine (DJ) code. I wish I has that system !!! I'm envious !!! I think you'll be real happy with that system. Best you can get stock without going to the Navigation system.

Jacobzky, you didn't mention whether or not you got the V8. I have observed that on the Sport you now have to get the V8 in order to get JBL 10 speaker system. That was not true in 2005. I have the 6 speaker, 6CD version and the thing that drives me nuts about it is there is very poor response to the volume knob. I'm repeatedly pushing the steering wheel volume knob to get it to a listenable level. Wish I had the JBL.

yes, its the V6 version, and yes the volume controller on the steering wheel is kinda not so responsive, its like takes a little more time to get to your desired level. i did listen to both stock and this jbl 6cd in-dash w/ 10 spkrs, and its way way better sound. im planning to put up a dvd entertainment system to keep my toddler happy on the road.
