06 4runner vs. 06 GX

I know there are other threads comparing the 4runner to the GX, but I thought I would start one dedicated to comparing the new 2006 versions of the vehicles. The reason.......because the 4runner has gotten several new features that bridges the gap a little. Does anyone know if the 2006 GX got some goodies that expands the gap?

Ok, we don't have to go as far as to compare the 2006 4runner to the 2006 GX.......let's just start with what new features does the 2006 GX have over the 2005 GX? I googled it, and haven't found anything yet.

The only change I know of to the 2006 Lexus GX470 is the Lexus Link. There were also some new colors released but that is all. The GX did not get nearly as many upgrades as the 4Runner. Here is my little comparison:
1) projector headlights- GX had it already
2) bluetooth navigation- GX had it already
3) memory seats- GX has a memory steering wheel and mirrors
4) audio input- GX doesn't have that but they still have the Mark Levinson upgrade
5) sport upgrades (tubular roof rails and running board and blacked out headlights)- GX only has the blacked out headlights
6) thicker glass- 4Runner got a lot quieter with this but the GX still beats it
7) 18'' rims- GX doesn't have it
8) simulated wood trim- GX has a real wood trim
Basically, most of the 4Runner's upgrades were already on the GX. Only some of the 4Runner's upgrades are exclusive to it. I would have to say the 4Runner is very close to the GX470 now without the Lexus name!

I think this is a good topic, but Im new here.

Seriuosly , I've been considering the GX and 4Runner also. THe dash of the GX just looks so much better and it has a better ride but the Runner seems to be set up better for towing ( rear door ) which I do often.

I think I'll save 10 grand and go for the new runner.

Thanks Mark, that is a great comparison. The reason I am suddenly interested in the 2006 is because my dad is thinking about a new 4runner or GX. He actually asked me if I would be ok with him copying me, and I said it was a complement, not a problem. Then I told him about how your dad got a runner too. I was leaning towards the GX for him because of these assumptions (which I realize some might not be correct):

1. Quality of service and even the experience of buying your car.
2. Better Options: The third row seat folds flat and has AC! The navigation and extra suspension are better.
3. Interior Head Room
4. Better quality materials and building it bumper to bumper.
5. Much quieter interior (actually designed with more sound protection).
6. Lots of little things that add up.

Oh, and I don't think the difference is quite $10k when comparing to a loaded 4runner....... I guess it all depends on the deal you get. But, for 2006 the 4runner did gain some serious ground.

4or2wheels: Just because you are new to the forum and Mark and I have thousands of posts doesn't mean we don't welcome input from everyone. Thanks for your feedback.

A fully loaded limited vs. a GX fully loaded are around a 10-11k difference at invoice.
My bad. I was thinking the invoice difference was more like $7k, but that was without the sport package thing and a few other little things. But that did factor in Nav and KDSS. I guess the difference is maybe I used the wrong source - Edmunds.

Here's a 05 - Gx I was looking at:

MSRP: $56,089.00 Type: 4dr SUV 4WD
Color: BLUE Interior:
Stock: 153708 Vin: JTJBT20X350090760
OPTIONS:

3RD ROW SEAT W/REAR AIR CONDITIONING, NAVIGATION SYSTEM/MARK LEVINSON AUDIO PKG, REAR SEAT ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM, SPORT PKG, TOW HITCH BRACKET, CARGO MAT, REAR SPOILER, WHEEL LOCKS

When I configured a loaded limited I think the MSRP was about 44,600 through the Toyota site, which isnt working right now.

X-REAS vs. KDSS

I seriously considered both back in '04. The GX has a nicer interior, higher quality leather, and more interior headroom. Hate the side opening rear door w/non-opening glass. As far as handling, I'll take an X-REAS equipped Runner over a non-KDSS GX anyday. Add the sport package and equip the GX to tow, and the difference is in the 11 -12K range.

Since you are looking at a 2005 Lexus, is the dealer giving you any money off the MSRP? Also, that color you were looking at is discontinued for 2006. If that does not bother you and the price is right, I don't see a problem going with the 2005 GX470. You couldn't tell a 2005 from a 2006 just by looking at it! ;):

They were going to give me the 05 at invoice about a month ago but when I saw the sport interior I wasnt to keen on the dark coloring. If I was going for a GX I would shoot for an 06 and try for 1000-2000$ over invoice. If the GX had a flip up rear door like the 4R I dont think it would be a question - I'd pick the GX

Oh, does the GX's ML/Nav read CD-R's and mp3's?

The ML/Nav on the RX400h was able to read a CD-R I made. I haven't tried it out with MP3's yet.

The 06 GX only has the Lexus link extra compared to the previous years.

The price difference between a well equipped 4R LTD V8 and GX is about $8k. The 4R is the sporty model, while the GX is luxury model. So pick accordingly. Even with the 06 4R added goodies it still comes up way short on the lux department. Drive both for a day and you will notice it quickly. What I like the most about the GX is that it is a lot more roomy inside in terms of both head and leg room, I also like the cargo space.

The 4R used to have better tucked up bumpers than the GX, but with the 06 4R the bumpers are fatter and lower than previous models. So 06 owners be aware that you are going to scrape your bumpers more off road than previous years.

SO the bottomline is pick the one you like most and get it. No point in comparing them, they are in different classes and really depends on what you want. It will take probably a few pages to list all the differences between the 2, there are a whole lot of stuff in the GX which never gets listed but you notice it after a while.

Yeah, but two incredibly sweet rides as you know.......so a little comparison is needed in my opinion. Maybe I should say an advantage/disadvantage analysis instead of trying to directly compare them on the same level. My dad is actually also considering the 400h, so Mark, you are a valuable asset. Who's vehicle is the RX400h? Bulldog, you've talked about your GX being a mall-queen.......what does that make the RX?

The RX400h is my mom's car. I drive it a lot and it is one sweet ride!

I actually had a 06 4 runner limited on order before I test drove the GX. With the recent gas prices, the GX's price is really coming down, just last year, the GX was going for $2000 to $4000 over invoice. I got my GX with comparable option as the 4 runner limited for just about $5500 more, a deal that I just couldn't resist. Most dealers are selling the GX from $0 to $500 over invoice now, which makes it really hard to justify buying a loaded 4 runner limited. The Interior, the quietness, those amazing leather seats and the smooth ride is what really sold me on the GX. The GX is well worth the extra $5000 in my opinion.

3. Interior Head Room

I went to the Detroit International Auto Show recently. When I sat in the GX, the center of the roof seemed higher. But the sides of the headliner come over your head a little, which makes it seem less high at those points than the 4Runner. I was very surprised that the headliner was designed that way.

The GX looks a little too high, giving it the appearance at times of being top-heavy. That would be okay if it gave you the headroom, but the headliner concels this benefit.

I agree, it looks too tall and skinny.
