06 acceleration flutter

Ive noticed a flutter under slow acceleration (<2k rpms) at ~30-34 mph.It feels similar to driving over those groups of small speed strips, but not quite as pronounced. Seems to be only when engine is warmed up. Otherwise smooth acceleration when heavier and at all other speeds. Any idea what this could be? I just put some. Fuel injector cleaner in last week but haven't driven enough for it to take effect.

Hi - i have an 03 4WD and recently started noticing the same thing - I actually did think i was hitting the speed ripples the first few times it happened. Did you have any luck figuring out what was going on?

Man you have to look up all the threads about bad Torque converters. I' m in the same boat right now with my 05 V6 4*4. It looks to be a really expensive bill. I have just been living with it. If it gets worse I might have to bite the bullet and get it replaced. By the way if you put it in"4" instead of "D" it doesn't happen

Those were my symptoms exactly. Fluid exchange at the dealership pretty much fixed the issue. Hopefully it doesn't come back.

I did a drive with a mechanic and he seemed to think it was staying in 4th gear too long. Are you still having luck with the fluid swap? I'm going to give the lower gear a try too - I did that once and thought I felt it - but could have just been a fluke.

Nice - I'm going to give it a shot. did you use standard Toyota WS ATF?

thanks for your posts by the way - very helpful.

I had the dealership near me do a full flush using the Toyota WS fluid. It wasn't too cheap, around $250 IIRC. They end up using a machine to exchange a full 12-16 quarts of fluid.

Based on the link in Post # 4, it seems some people had luck just doing a few drain-and-fills using the Toyota WS fluid. This might be a cheaper alternative to the dealership, but it won't get the fluid out of the torque converter, where I believe the problem is actually occurring.

Also it is possible to do the full fluid exchange yourself by pulling the return line at the radiator. Basically you pull the line, turn the car on so it pumps out a couple quarts, shut it off, fill with a couple of quarts, and repeat until fresh fluid starts to come out.

If you do it yourself using one of the two methods above, keep in mind that you will have to do a final check of the fluid level at operating temperature.

Also, what year T4R do you have? I believe earlier non-sealed trannies used standard ATF, while the sealed units from 2005+ use the WS fluid.

I have an 03...I'll likely have a mechanic do it, just to avoid the hassle - I'm going to be pulling a boat this summer, so want to get it taken care of.

Because I had the dealership do a full fluid flush/exchange, all of the fluid was replaced/new. They basically pump out all the old fluid and pump in new fluid at the same time using a machine. Symptoms were gone on the drive home from the dealership.

Since yours uses a different kind of fluid, I can't guarantee that it will work, but it sure is going to be cheaper than a new torque converter or transmission. If you have really high mileage, you might want to consider doing a few drain-and-fills as opposed to the flush/exchange. This will take a while for the new fluid to work through, and you may have to do it several times.

Did you notice the rumble even on decleration - I've notice that it happens both accelerating and when you take your foot off the gas....but still while you are in the 30MPH-45MPH range...

I know I felt it on acceleration, but I can't remember if it was there when I took my foot off the gas as well.

I felt it right "in between" shifts, like right when it was supposed to shift from 2-3 or 3-4 it would do it, and it felt/sounded exactly like driving on a rumble strip on the shoulder of the highway. It didn't happen all the time, usually when accelerating from stop up a slight incline. I couldn't always reproduce it.

So far so good, only been a couple weeks, but I've done a lot of driving and have had any issues so far...knock on wood. - thanks for the advice..
