06 Add to the garage?

what do you guys think about this one - me adding it to keep the 3rd Gen company. And yes, it is also Silver.
Did this year have the cracked dash issue?

Advice needed. Looking at possible buy this month.
2006 Limited V8
143,000 Miles / 4x4
Dealer asking $10900
Tires look good
I do need to find out about the timing belt change and history.
4x4 ok. Electronic is new for me.
Both electric seats work and heat.

Issues I noticed other than some under carriage and hitch rust:
headlights foggy (? -not water but not clear),
scratches on driver lower side like from a Bush or such.
Driver leather seat has rip but not thru to foam,
no cargo cover but has the platform.

Good deal and/or what should I negotiate down other than seat repair and timing belt (price) if not done?

I don't know about you, but the 3rd row seats are a must for my next vehicle. Having two vehicles for my wife and family that both only seat 5 max doesn't work well for us especially if we want to go anywhere with anyone.

Any 4Runner made on or after 1996 is solid. You know what you're buying. Although I'm not really a fan of the brand new 4Runners, they didn't really add anything useful to them and are a bit pricey.
 
The only thing that freaks me out is the electronic 4x4. I am a huge fan of having the stick to shift into the gear.

With this V8 it can tow 7000 lbs which would better fit my camper towing needs for years to come also.

just the ripped seat and seat heater recall is all that's keeping me from pulling the trigger. But you all have shown me that I can get a junk yard seat and replace it if necessary. :) You make me feel brave.
 
Have you looked at it in person?

There was at one time I was on a quest for a V8 4th gen. I looked at many of them, and they were all ragged out. Pictures would look great, I would get there and the car looked like it had 300K miles on them. I have since given up my search, unless one pops up locally that I can run and check out quick. Clean ones go for 20K now. For 10K I wouldn't expect much.
 
Looks nice, and will be far better to tow the Airstream than any other 4runner.

There are some things to looks out for before buying, post on the 4th gen board for inquiries.

No go on the 5th gen then?
 
Correct on the 5th Gen. They sold the one I wanted.

But this one keeps sticking in my head. Probably the silver attraction. I'll post to 4th Gen.
 
Sorry if I posted this but looking for quick answers.
I've looked at the stickies and wanted a fast run down on what to look for other than rust.
I'm going again tonite to look at this with a flashlight and fine tooth comb. Anything I can have in the arsenal will be welcomed info.

I have noted the headlights are foggy, driver seat leather ripped on side bottom, some rust underneath, something weird on the roof (not sure if dirt or rubber?) and the 4x4 switch baffles me so I'll read up on that, some side scratches from looks like a bush drivers side.

I appreciate any help.
 
Rust is your priority on that one. My guess would be that it's covered in it. The price is really good. The V8 has a timing belt, so check to see if it's been replaced. Make re you know the 4lo operating sequence and check to make sure t goes into 4lo. Make sure the transfer case actuator isn't leaking gear oil.
 
Looks clean from the tiny photos. Timing belt is way over due. Not sure what the dealer will offer off because they know everyone wants the 4.7 and most won't even know it needs to be replaced. I would offer 7K based on the fact it needs a belt and settle around $9000 if possible. Maybe 10K if it's really clean and I was tired of looking. But, it's really up to you and what you feel the value is.
 
My old stomping grounds. I was a tech at Gregory Infiniti down the street for years before I moved to Arizona. That’s a good price on a V8 4th gen, I’d also use the timing belt not being done as a bargaining tool. I looked for a 4th gen for a long time, but ended up with a GX470 (same exact truck but luxurious). 4 years later I wouldn’t change it for the world.
 
Check KBB, NADA for value. I would call it in Good category. If minimal rust.
Since it's at the dealer, ask them to throw in the timing belt as part of deal.
Seat recall could be covered at dealer, part of deal?
Rust, take a pick for use in judging depth of rust, pick at it.
The Headlights can be cleared up with Flizt polish in black bottle works real good.
4th gen cargo covers show up more often Ebay CL.
The scratchs/roof can be worked with.

RoyBell - thanks for that advice on $$. I did confirm the timing belt hasn't been done and he said there were no recalls - wrong-O..there have been 5 with the seat heaters being one of them.
But with that said, I'll go in low but not gonna cry if they say no deal. There's always another one out there.
BlackCat914 - so glad you escaped this crazy place and went to a nice sunny 80 all the time. :)

Do you happen to have a good link for the 4x4 operating run down? I figured out the 4H and diff lock but didn't test the 4Lo and messed with 2Lo but couldn't figure that out on the fly.
Not sure where the transfer case actuator is, but I'll white glove it.

80 all the time? Haha, it’s 80 in the winter, 115+ in the summer.

I was dead set on a 4th Gen as my next vehicle, then someone showed me the GX470's (and 460's) and I'm in that same boat. That's definitely going to be the family vehicle in the near future, those things are awesome.

The instructions for operating the 4X4 system should be in the owner's manual, it should also be on the driver's sun visor if I'm not mistaken.

The frame component that suffers the worst and usually is a BIG warning sign for the rest of the frame is the radiator support and the assorted tubing attached to it, also check the top of the frame in the right front wheel well close to the firewall, that is where the AC condensation drips down on the frame.

At 143,000 miles I would try and get them to do the timing belt and water pump unless they can prove it has been done within the last 20,000 miles or so, or deduct the cost of getting it done (around $800 to $1200 depending on where you get it done, it wouldn't cost them that much to do it there, but that's what it would cost you to get it done at a local garage/dealer), these timing belts should last for 90,000 miles before it's time to do the belt again.

The water pump very well might not need to be replaced but most everyone replaces it when doing the timming belt because everything to do the water pump has to come off to do the timing belt and if you don't replace it and the old water pump does crap out and starts leaking it WILL destroy the new timing belt within 10,000 miles or so if not sooner and if the belt breaks it will do MAJOR damge to the engine, as in needing a new/used engine.
 
I did do some back checking on this 06 and it looks like through the history the timing belt and water pump were changed. So if this was done then I can still go in low due to the ripped seat and get this.
This is what I found - SPARE TIRE VERY LOW SET ALL TO 35PSI RESET LIGHT,DISCOUNT APPLIED,DISCOUNT APPLIED,CUSOTMER HAS REQUESTED A MULTI-POINT INSPECTION,REPLACE LEAKING WATER PUMP, TIMING BELT, THERMOSTAT, ACC. DRIVE BELT,CV BOOTS ONE SIDE - REPLACE BOTH INNER AND OUTER PASS FRT,REPALCE LEFT INNER CV BOOT SMALL CLAMP,TUNE-UP - BASIC,UPDATE ECM SOFTWARE AND INSTALL UPDATE LABEL
 
Let us know if you get it. The V8s are like minted gold around here. The 2uz is a great engine.

I'd love to be able to put one in my 3rd gen.
 
That seems like a fair price assuming it is clean in person. The cracked dash issue was resolved in 2006. The V8 is awesome. Good luck!
