'06 four runner sport general Q's

Hello. I am new to toyotas. I am considering buying my first toy, it is an '06 four runner sport v6. I test drove one the other day, while on the highway, I noticed that at about 70 mph that the tach was reading close to 3000 rpms. This seemed high to me in a vehicle w/ a 5 speed auto trans. Is this normal highway cruising engine rpms? I have a 99 gmc jimmy that only revs about 2500 rpms on the highway and it has a 4 speed auto trans. Thanks for your help.

At 70 mine is just a hair above 2,000 RPM. I have a 2006 V6 2WD.

On mine it depends on what tires I am running but 3K seems high to me... are you sure its shifting into 5th?

3,000 rpm's at 70 mph sounds pretty high to me. My Runner is just over 2,000 rpms at 70. Like someone else said, are you sure it's shifting into 5th gear?
What size tires?

Stock size tires. At about 75 I'm hitting a hair over 2300 Rpms.

On most Toyota's it is by design that the vehicle will not shift into OD until it the transmission warms to a specific temperature. Did you drive it right off a dealer lot and immediately hit the highway? Are you in a cold weather climate?

How does that work. Even with different size tires your RPM could be about the same.

That is high. Seems like it is not kicking into the highest gear.

Not to question your intelligence but are you sure you're not in 4th gear? Its easy to accidentally slip into 4th from "D" if you're not used to truck.

Test

Do this to see if you have a transmission up shift problem

Drive 70km/hr as you have been doing in D (drive). Then change it to "4", see if the revs change (should rev higher) If not, your tranny is not up shifting to D (5th gear)

High RPMs

I noticed that on mine a few weeks ago while driving down the freeway. Finally figured out that I had inadvertently pulled the shift lever over toward the driver's side of the vehicle into 4th. There's a detent.

Check the indicator in the instrument cluster. The D should be illuminated and not the 4.

Yep, I'm a noob to 4Runners and Toyotas.
