I have 6 cyl '06 without a factory hitch. I am aobut to get a hitch and have already research brands and not found a lot of difference. My main question is...do they have to cut the rear valence to make it work. It seems like the factory hitches are all cut into the valence. Just wondering...

You could probably by a toyota hitch on ebay. I've seen them periodically on there. Look for a V8 hitch as it can support 7000lb

I'm in the same situation as you're in. I think you would have to cut the bumper in order attach the hitch the rear most cross member. It might be possible to fit the hitch up there and force the bumper to bend a little bit. I want to get a hitch step to protect my bumper from people hitting me when they park. But if I have to cut the bumper, I might just forgo the hitch and hitch step and wait until my bumper gets chewed up by idiots and then just replace it with one that has the cut out and get the hitch then.
I stop the dealer today and I was looking at the factory V8 hitch, it looks like maybe the upper mount can be removed or unused. There's two bolts above the square receiver (opposite side of where the holes for chains would go).
I'm looking at getting the Hidden Hitch, it looks like the V8 hitch and it goes for about $150. I want a hitch for mounting accessories, not so much for towing anything. I didn't order the hitch with my 4Runner because I thought all bumpers would have the cut out... another member posted pictures of an '06 in the 'Changes for 06' thread without a hitch.
When the weather clears up, I'll go an examine the hitch mounting more closely.

U-Haul has a round tube hitch for 169. it is a class 3 meaning it will carry 5000 as a weight carrying hitch and 5500 with distribution. They will throw in a lifetime guarantee for $15 (I think). Call them, they will be able to tell you if this hitch will require any bumper trimming.

Conflict with Uhaul hitch receiver and taillight connector
I bought a used 2006 4Runner which already had a Uhaul #78445 trailer hitch receiver installed. There is a bracket which holds the tail light connector bundle, but it's positioned such that it faces the tube of the hitch so the watertight cap on the connector won't open more than 1/2 inch.
Anyone know best way to resolve this? I hate be drilling holes to move the mounting - perhaps there is a different bracket. Hoping someone has already worked this out.

I switched out the flimsy hitch on my V6 with a Curt. It doesn't sit up in the notch that the factory hitch sat in. At first I didn't like it because it is kind of "out there" but it is a lot easier to get to the hitch pin now, especially a locking pin. Mine came back with the plug covered by the cross tube so I took at back and they relocated the light plug to the side. See pics below...
