Since it's predicted there won't be any significant changes between the 06 and 07 model year, there's not much benefit in waiting. You can get a good interest rate and buy it now, then use your money to pay it off next year, or you can invest it or use it for other things, like household projects. Car loans have lower interest rates than home equity lines or credit cards, so you're better off having a car payment and using the cash for those other things that are important. I vote to get the truck now. I just picked up my 06 Sport yesterday and couldn't be happier.

Is there any particular reason you are holding out for an '07 model? If you are waiting for a particular feature which may or may not be included then that's just a waste of time. If you can afford to wait for 8-9 months for the '07s and do not need a new vehicle, then invest your money in other ways. There will always be some kind of incentive or rebate once the '07 models roll out. The cycle will just repeat itself for every model year. Hell, you might change your mind once the '07s come out and want an '08 instead. Just get one now if you really want one, the changes will most likely be minimal. If your just waitning for the next best thing then you'll always be waiting. That's the nature of technology, it won't stand still.
I brought my '05 in for its 5k service and was looking at the '06 runners on the lot. Although I craved the newer models, I still wouldn't forsake my '05. It's still a great truck.

I will have to wait till 07 because delivery has to be by Jan 31 to get the rebate. Spoke to 3 dealers they do not think I will get it in time since no Limiteds are available in Salsa red with nav and grey interior. Would be a special order, they want to sell what they have in stock to get the rebate.
You are right, I really am waiting for the next best thing. However I will have to buy in 07, cant wait any longer.

As long as gas prices stay high, the rebates and incentives on 4Runners (and other SUVs) will continue. The dealerships are trying to move them because they don't sell as fast as the hybrids or smaller vehicles. That said, I think the rebates 2-3 months from now will be the same if not better than now. The rebate yesterday when I bought my 4Runer was $1000 cash back or 3.9% financing (I took the financing). You mentioned as of today the rebate for this month is $1500 back. If this trend continues or stays the same, you'll be fine whether you take delivery now or order one and pick it up later.
It's all up to you of course, but like others have said... We're always curious about the next best thing, but while we're waiting for the next best thing, we're missing out on the current best thing. With this in mind, I'm very happy with my 2006 4Runner and figure the 07s will be a carryover year, so nothing gained by waiting.

If the 4Runner is on the typical Toyota product life cycle, then '07 will not see any significant changes, if any at all compared to the '06. By typical Toyota product life cycle, a brand new and major redesign every 5 years, year 3 has engine/powertrain upgrades and year 4 there's a minor facelift.
This holds true for most Toyota's that have a 5 year life cycle. The current Camry in its 5th gen: 2002 new body style, 2004 V6 SE trim got the 3.3-liter 3MZ (although later model 2003 V6 models got VVT-i and 5 speed), 2005 got the face lift, 2007 introduction of the 6th Gen. The 4th gen 4Runner, introduced in '03, '05 V8's got VVT-i, V6's got a 5 speed and in '06 it got a face lift.
IMO, as others have mentioned, the waiting will never end since it only gets better. In '03 I waited until the '04 Camrys arrived, so I could get the 3.3 V6, but then '05 got the update. But I never thought twice about holding out for another year to get the '05 Camry. I think I just lucked out this time around being able to get the '06 4R with the minor update.

I'd hold out until the 2008 model comes around. Toyota will HAVE to enlarge the 4Runner or risk losing sales. All of this is due to the fact that Toyota redesign/enlarge the RAV4 for this year. The storage cubic ft. space in the RAV4 is only 4-5 ft less than the 4Runner. The engine in the RAV was also beefed up.
Also, you have to factor in the other competitors in this midsize market. The redesign Ford Exploder expanded to 85.5 cubic ft and the Chevy TrailFaker is also likely to expand on the new GMT 500 platforms.
I am going to wait on the redesigned 2008 Sequoia. I am hoping it finally gets either a 5spd or a new generation 6spd tranny. The ONLY way I'd buy another 4Runner is if it was to get significantly larger in all areas. The darn thing just feels too crampy---I'm only 5'9" 180 lbs and feel stuffed into the Runner.
