06 Radio: "Text" button

With an MP3 disk, you can scroll through some of the available ID3 tag data from the MP3. Things such as artist, track, cd title, etc are avilable. With a normal audio CD, it only offers song title, artist, and CD title I believe.

I have an 06 Ltd with the JBL 6-disc in dash. What does the "Text" button do? In my wife's car it shows what song is playing on CD or the radio. In the 4runner, it does nothing...

The 2006 4Runner radios do not have the RDS system. That means the only thing the text button will do is show you which song is playing when you have a CD in. You have to add CD text to the CD through the software you use to burn it. Most factory CD's don't have this feature.

They got rid of it? That doesn't make any sense. I like it on my 04 too.

When I had my 03, it would only show MP3 titles. It wouldn't show the radio id. Since they removed it on the 06, it must have been a production update on the 04-05 only.

Well that's lame, I like seeing what song and artist is being played on the radio.

Is this true with the 06 Nav units too?

The '06 doesn't show ID on Rado or factory CD's. I can't confirm the MP3 CD's because I haven't done it yet. I'll check it out this week.

What about the folder button? Is that for the MP3 CD's as well?

I have the Nav unit in my '06. When you tune in on FM stations, it does scroll whatever tags the station is transmitting. Some stations broadcast the song titles & artists while others just broadcast their station name or the name of the show you are listening to.

The thing that chaps my butt about the MP3 CDs though is that it does not appear to read the ID3 tags. It will display the folder name that the MP3 is in and the actual file name (underscores, file extensions, & all) instead of the information in the ID3 tag. This requires the user to consciously organize the songs into folders that reflect the song album or artist and possibly rename the filename in order to get logical data about what is playing.

Now if they can just figure a way to get the AUX input to read song data from an iPod dock connector, I would be set!

That's good, I want to someday upgrade to the nav, but I didnt' want to lose RDS tho.

If you're planning on getting the factory nav, you might want to hurry. Last time I saw on oemvalue.com, they said it was their last shipment and they're not going to be receiving anymore of the Camry or Solara units. I hope it's not true.

They said once in their forums, that they might start carrying the 06 4Runner Nav sometime this summer.

It shows ID data on factory CDs or self-burnt audio CD's as long as the CD-TEXT was burnt to the CD. Not all factory CD's have CD-TEXT.

You are not going to loose the RDS with the nav. My 2005 unit and my dad's 2006 unit has it.

LSUMBA, my nav unit in my 06 GX does this too. It is a nice feature.
