06 "slides" when trying to stop

Ok, so this is the 3rd time this has happened. First time, I thought I was on ice, second time as well. Today not so much. Very strange, when I am creeping to a stop, my 4runner tends to keep going, its almost like I am on ice sliding but my wheels arent locked up. So the question is how do I stop? I let off the brake, the truck gets out of what ever funk its in and then I apply the brake pedal and its fine. Today it happened again, I was in the middle of the road had to back up, when I went to shift from D to R to the Engine rev up to 2500 RPM them it was fine.

Its not happening all the time so trying to go to the dealership isnt worth it right now.

Has anyone had this problem?

It kinda sounds like the ABS is kicking in. Do you feel any feedback from the car with your foot on the brake pedal? Something like a thump and then the pedal presses a little farther than it normally does?

B/c the first couple of days I had the car, I was coming to a slow stop and this is the sensation I felt, but kinda wrote it off as a one-time thing. Now you have me a bit worried. I have an '05 Ltd 4wd
 
Do you have your A/C on during these events?
My girlfriend calls me crazy when I mention it but honest to goodness when the A/C is on I feel like the truck drives and stops just a little different than when it's off.
i.e. a little more road travel, noticeable on the freeway, something kind of like the 'sliding' that you're describing also during stops.
if i can determine another difference i will post that as well.

Crazy as it might sound, I have learned to press on the brake pedal a little harder when stopped. When I first got the 4Runner, I noticed that it has a tendency to want to creep forward, especially if the engine is idling higher because the A/C is running. There must be a lot of power under the hood! Making a more concerted effort to press the brake pedal solved the "problem".
 
Actually, I noticed that as well. Probably 24 hours after I got my 4 runner I noticed the same. I thought it was me but it happened a couple of times.

Are you sure? Even with the AC button off, the compressor will still run (and increase the engine RPM's) if you have it in defrost mode.
 
I think I know this sensation you're talking about. It's almost like the rotors are glazed over with ice or something and you're not stopping as quickly as you are used to. It's happened to me a couple of times, almost unrepeatable, but a little unsettling.
 
Mike that is exactly what I felt. Granted in live in Massachusetts and there is ice and snow all over the place but I would have expected the ABS to kick in but not so much. Yeah and its hardly reproducable so there is no chance of going to the dealership for this. Just have to pump the brake when you feel it and it fixes the slide.
 
I think glazing might be part of the issue. Has only happened to me during the cold weather here (yes, we've been getting freezing rain and snow here in MD). I'm hoping that when the brakes need servicing I'll be replacing with slotted rotors that'll solve the issue. Always had these rotors on my past rides except my old STi, and those I never did, but would kind of do the same thing when wet.
 
I had the same effect just about an hour ago. I was driving slow, i say 20 because there is snow in Queens, NY... I came to a stop sign, and i pressed on the breaks, but the car kept going!!! I had to really press hard on the break!! I felt that there was like a coke bottle underneath the break so it couldnt go down, but when i got of the car to double check, there wasnt anything underneath!!! I couldnt even stop at the stop sign and i rolled into the middle of the intersection!!! Thank god no one was crossing the street or if a car was in front of me!!! I've had my 4 runner since 05, i bought it brand new, i noticed that my breaks have been slipping. i only accumulated 27k on it... I think i might have to change my breaks!!1 Nuts!! Whatever it is, i hope it doesnt happen again!
 
Ok so I figured out the problem....it has to do with the object between the steering wheel and the seat! What happens is that I am used to driving a stick, so the pedals are smaller and there is more room between the brake the gas. Well after driving a stick for 12 years I got the 4runner. Since I have a size 13 shoe sometimes when I go into reverse and see the rpms spike or the car starts to slide with the brake pedal depressed its due my shoe hitting the gas pedal while the brake is applied hence the "slide" and the spike in rpms. I realized this yesterday!! There must be a 1/2 inch between the brake and gas so just be careful if you have big feet like me :). Thank god its a human defect and not a real defect!!!!!!! HAHA!!

I'm guilty of having a Size 13 shoe.... But it happened the next day as well, almost hit a Ford Explorer... Cheap azz american cars!

I was going to say I know the exact feeling. If you depress the brakes and while stopping you go over a pothole or bump, or a section of the road that is relatively bumpy, the brakes pretty much become useless. The petal goes all the way to the floor and ABS does not engage. The petal feels like its fully disconnected from anything and you have to release it and press it again. I can reproduce this pretty easily on my '05 SE 4x4 and my fathers '06 Limited 4x4.
 
smokey7722, you are absolutely right... I think before i almost hit the ford explorer i hit a pot hole and i was trying to slow down!! I think i had released my break and then hit it again...

Its damn annoying however after it happens to you once, you can work around it. Either brake accordingly when coming up to a pothole or know your going to need to reapply the brakes. Usually I just hit the brakes hard before and then hot the hole, then hard after.

If you just push to lift your butt out of the seat it will stop... Once into a hard application the brake boost feature will kick in. It's a wierd sensation and effective.

I'd encourage you to try it so you're familiar with the sensation and the resulting stop. It's so wierd it could startle you into releasing the brakes when maybe you shouldn't.

I'm not knocking your methodology I'm just saying know that this 'next layer' of nanny features is there.
