06 sport brake failure! 9200 miles..

hey guys,

my wife was driving the runner to work and at a stop light the brake pedal slowly sank and eventually floored... vehicle still moving ..she had to press the ebrake to get it to stop..
we called tustin toyota to bring it in and have it looked at but had to called to get the runner towed...
tow truck driver came, wife explained problem and of course car is fine!?
so driver leaves w/o runner..
i get there and traded trucks with wife and everything is good, drove it back to work..
I head out to get lunch and exit out of work driveway..while at a stop the brake pedal slowly starts to sink to the floor!!! OMG!
the car only has 9200 miles on it

anyone else have this problem?
lmk Im taking the truck into toyota tomorrow morning..

You have a bad master cylinder. Someone else mentioned of having a bad master cylinder on this board, so that makes two people.

It is uncommon for things like this to fail, but again not all things manufactured are 100% perfect. The good thing is that it will be covered under warranty.

my wife just said that the dan in service stated its a common problem for new 4runner s brakes to fail at 10k... :awais:
well see what happens tomorrow.
hope its a quick fix!
if its just the master, then it better be a quick fix

I doubt it's a common problem since it hasn't been covered extensively on this or other 4Runner boards.

Parts do go bad however.

Let us know what happens with the brakes. My 06 brakes stink after driving freeway speeds for about 15 min. I bought the truck used (8k miles on it) from Car Max. I took it back to them to fix, and they couldn't find anything wrong with the brakes. They continued to stink and so I took it to the Dealership (it now has 9K miles on it) and the dealership took a look at the brakes, said they looked fine, no sign of overheating, nothing looked out of the ordinary. The brakes still stink, it smells like I am riding my brakes non-stop. ( both places had the nerve to ask me if I was driving down the freeway with my emergency brake on!!)

I wouldn't call it a common failure. We've got about 11.5k members on the forum and if it was common, we'd know about it. I've had my truck for 3yrs/34kmiles and the brakes are awesome. I'm due to get a brake flush though...

lobo princesa - Have you popped open the brake reservoir and looked at your brake fluid? If it is very dark, you should probably have your brake fluid flushed and replaced. Do your brakes feel "mushy" after a while?

both places had the nerve to ask me if I was driving down the freeway with my emergency brake on!!

They should not have asked this question; instead they should have looked at the e-brake rotor surface and determined if you were riding the brakes.

The 4th generation runners have the best truck brakes that I have ever driven. This is my fourth SUV. So if you say the brakes are not good then I believe you and something must be wrong with them!

Obviously, dirkjunky has a complete componet failure, and has a different issue than your vehicle.

I did a search on this website for "brakes" and found these two postings, both are very similar to my issue, with the exception, that my car is not pulling to the side, rather the smell comes mostly from the rear passenger side. I pulled out the paperwork from Carmax and they did find some "normal service rust on the drum side" that they sanded off.

That can't be correct because our 4runners do not have drums, they have 4 wheel disc brakes.

If you have ever pulled the rear rotors off, then you would understand. All rear disc brakes also have a mini-drum built into the hub part of the rotor. This mini-drum is how the parking brake is applied.

Check the temperature of your rotors. After driving and when you start to smell something, pull over and VERY carefully check the temp (by feeling with your fingers) on the "drum" portion of the rotor. Not the actual caliper disc braking surface but the area between the caliper surface and the wheel mounting surface (between the wheel spokes.) Check for relative differences between left and right, front and rear wheels. Feel if there is a big difference between all 4 and let us know. If the parking brake(s) is/are dragging then there should be more heat than on the fronts. The dealer probably just did a visual check without even removing the wheels and rear rotors.

2006 4-runner brakes fail after service

Hey Everyone,
This is my first post. Not sure what to make of this problem. I have a 2006 4-runner with 35,000 miles. Recently I took it into the dealer who tild me that I needed new brakes. In the "report" it said: "Inspected brakes and found brake pads were worn down to 15%. Replaced pads and resurfaced rotors. Serviced calipers and hardware springs." I also had the recall service on the gas pedal and the service tech told me that they were going to "re-program" the computer system so that the gas was not operable when the brake was applied. --- Well, the next day my wife drove the truck along a bumpy dirt road and told me she was hearing a vibration. So the the next day I ws driving the truck and I could hear a clicking/clanking sound when I applied the brakes, especially if I was on an incline. Well, things got worse... I was driving through traffic and suddenly the brake pedal goes all the way to the floor board and I am still going 30 mph. I live in L.A. and ahead of me is a stop light. well, I put the truck in neutral and hit the emergency brake. Luckily I was close to home and managed to ride the emergency brake into my driveway. Needless to say, this scared the living ****e out of me. What if I ws on the freeway?Or my wife was and the kids were with her. I will call the dealer tomorrow. But I wanted to check and see if anyone had any similar experiences? Shouldn't the dealer tow the truck to the dealership? I sure don't want to drive it. any info is greatly appreciated.
