06 sport steering wheel vibration

any other owners of the 06 experiencing vibation?....so far my dealer has replaced the lft......problem still exists....always at random times and speeds....ive read about the malfunctiong steering valve in this thread.....would this be possible in the 06 as well? im getting tired of shaking steering on a vehicle of this quality...i expect it on my 1966 bronco!! help please!!

Not to make the situation seem trivial, but have you had the tires balanced since the vibration appeared? An unbalanced tire can cause the vibration.

John, thanks for the reply......yes the tires were balanced after the new left front tire was changed, the dealer thought the tire was bad. but the problem persists....always random but can get quite bad.........so....back to the dealer.....thanks, mark

Keep us posted. The only other problem I've had that could cause it was a bad tire -- but you have had that taken care of already.

2006 SR5 V6 4 Runner steering wheel vibration

I just leased a 2006 toyota 4runner this past August. I am experiencing the steering wheel vibration at 60mph and above. A week after I bought it, I had the tires rotated and balanced. A week later I brought it back for the same thing. The dealership said they tested the tires and that they were all within the specs. The following week I still experienced the same thing and now the tire pressure light was on. So I brought it in again, for the third time and they said the left front tire was low 4 lbs. So they balanced the tires again. The problem still is not resolved. Let me know if you have any better luck. I don't know what else to do.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I EXPERIENCE!!! ESPECIALLY AT 65MPH
IIVE HAD ONE TIRE CHANGED SO FAR...NO LUCK....IM MOVING NEXT WEEK BACK TO SCL UT FROM MICHIGAN SO I WILL HAVE TO TAKE IT UP WHEN I GET BACK HOME. I DID FIND AN ARTICLE ON THIS SITE CONCERNING A PROPORTIONING VALVE IN THE STEERING SYSTEM THAT WAS ON AN EARLIER MODEL...IT MIGHT BE THE SAME, ILL POST WHEN I FIND OUT.....PRETTY SOON TOYOTAS GOING TO GET A 4RUNNER BACK IF IT DOES NOT GET RESLOVED.....ITS A SHAME AS I LOVE EVERYTHING ELSE ABOUT THE TRUCK...PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU FIND OUT FIRST, I CAN BE REACHED AT [email protected]

Is the vibration more like a buzzing at around 65MPH that you can even feel on the shift lever?

Is it a left-right wobble in the steering wheel?

The buzzing vibration will go away. The wobble is the tires.

I am going to try and take it to another Toyota dealer next week. Hopefully they will have a better answer. I will definately keep you updated with anything I find out. I will also ask them about the proportioning valve as well. It's amazing how the mechanics and service techs are just clueless to what is causing the problem. They keep telling me "4runners should have a smooth ride." Did your 4runner start doing this as soon as you got it? Does your's vibrate every time you hit 65 and above? Keep me updated with whatever you find out. I wonder if contacting Toyota direct may have any solutions to the problem?

mine started by pulling to the left from the time i left the dealership along with the shimmy. after the left front tire was replaced the pulling was gone but the shake is still present. a few time it has been quite pronounced. at presrent it starts as 55 mph is approached and gets the worst at 65. passing 70 it calms down. at 65 if you let go the steering wheel the wheel shimmies left to right about 1/2 in. this problem used to exist on early ford broncos 66 to 77 and was corrected by adding a front steering stabilizer shock. im sure this is not something you would to to a vehicle of this type but it shows that its not in the tires....or at least i would be surprised. i guess my next move in a few weeks when i get out west is to make the dealership change all the tires to a different brand.....so, ill let you know, thanks, mark

I am experiencing trouble driving straight, it seems everytime i correct the steering wheel, tuck starts going the other way. I keep adjusting for the drift and it drives me nuts to keep "wheeling" the streering wheel. Or is the steering too sensitive? could it be related to tires?

There was a lot of discussion about this issue on this site in the past. I'm surprised that the thread wasn't made "sticky".

There seems to be a problem with some driveshafts. Do a search here for it. Toyota has a TSB for the Lexus verson (a new driveshaft), but not for the 4Runner. I've also included a link a below.

I had the same problem in my 06. I brought it to a dealership in Orange Park (one whose service dept. has a very good rep) and they balanced my tires on 3 separate occasions, all the time using the Hunter 9700. I asked if the machine was properly calibrated, they told me they calibrate it every week (yeah right).

Finally, out of frustration, I brought it to another dealer in St. Augustine, one who also uses the 9700. They fixed the problem in 20 minutes and it rides smooth as glass. The service manager told me that either the other machine was not properly calibrated or that the tech simply didn't follow the directions.

Either way, my point is this - the balancing is only as good as the tech or a properly spec'd machine.

Try another dealer.
