06 SR5 - air conditioning issue

air conditioning works fine. however, when i push the A/C button, i can hear rather apparent, if not loud, thud from the engine room. i can also feel a bit of vibration. if i push the A/C button after the engine is sufficiently warmed up, the noise is negligible, although it's still there and i can feel it everytime if i try. if i push the A/C button right after starting the engine, the noise is rather loud to make me feel worried and wonder if somethhing is breaking down.

i guess the noise is the A/C being engaged on but why the noise is so loud is beyond me. my previous car was chevy and i never had this kind of problem before.

anybody else having this same problem? if this is a design issue, i can live with it. if not, time to go visit my dealer...

Take it to the stealer under warranty. I have an '04 without this issue. Can't even tell when it cycles on/off.

mine did this too. i thought that it was the compressor kicking on and off.

The thud is just the compressor clutch kicking in and putting a load on the engine. Give it some time to break in and wear in; the sound may get quieter over time. If you're still worried about it later down the road, then have the dealer looked at it, but give it a chance to break in first.

When idoling at a stop with the air condit on, I notice my RPS go from 500 rpm to 700 rpm and then back down to 500 every 5 or so seconds. When I turn off the air, the variable idoling stops.

2006 4Runner V8 Sport.

Mine also makes a thud when the air turns on when it is cold. It did this when I took it for a test drive before I purchased it. The dealer told me it's normal and is just the compressior.

It does sound like of odd....

Anyone else experience this?

It sounds normal to me. The RPM's will change as the load on the engine changes. That a/c compressor sucks a lot of power off the motor and it is just trying to keep up. Do you turn your a/c off when you turn the car off?

I have yet to figure out why anybody 'turns off the A/C' when they shut off their car.... Turning off the ignition switch does this for you... If you really think it makes a single bit of a difference when you go to restart the vehicle, you're mistaken. The A/C compressor will not cycle on until a couple of seconds after the engine is running, so it does not have any effect on starting the vehicle.

People that turn the A/C on and off when stopping and restarting their vehicle either have an obsessive-compulsive disorder or they just want to wear out the button that much sooner. Those are about the only two reasons for doing it.

Prove WHAT? The fact that the A/C compressor will NOT kick in until 1-2 seconds AFTER the engine is running? Prove what? The fact that ALL unnecessary accessories (radio, HVAC fan inside the vehicle, etc) are automatically powered OFF when the starter is engaged???

What makes you think it will make a single bit of a difference if you turn off the A/C manually when shutting off the vehicle?

I agree the compressor does not engage for a few seconds. I turn mine off because of the cold engine/high idle after starting. With the compressor on, it is even more reluctant to shift out of 1st and 2nd gears.

I also turn the radio off.

Depending on the weather, I'll drive a mile or two with no AC or radio just to listen to the engine/drivetrain. A bit obsessive for a new vehicle.
