07 4runner sport - Ice Racing

I went Ice racing this past weekend, which is basically a long autocross course on ice. The weather got up to mid 40s so quite a bit of the ice melted and turned into slush and water. By the end of the day there was areas that had ~5-6 inches of standing water over the ice.

Anyhow, the 4runner did great. Just has Nitto Terra Grapplers 265/70/17. I placed 2nd in Truck/SUV, and 3rd overall.

What do you do for that? Lower tire pressure? Do guys race studded or studless winter tires? Or do you just 'run whatcha brung' and have a blast?

Pretty much run what cha brung. There were AWD/RWD/FWD classes which were subdivided on engine size, and then a Studded class.

I didn't even air down, but conditions were mainly slushy watery so I didn't even experiment with air pressure. There was people there running all season tires, and there was one guy with studded tires that trailered in

He only ran once, probably because conditions weren't really ideal for "ice" studs, but he was fast

His only time was 142.766 seconds. 2nd place was 192.395, and I clocked in at 3rd with 194.658.
 
And I've been telling people Nittos are great in snow despite the lack of a snowflake symbol adorning the sidewall.

Great pics and brings back memeories of running my AWD Eclipse on the ice up at Georgetown Lake here in Colorado.
 
I believe the minimum thickness to run this even is 12 inches. I think the day started off at 16 inches but weened down a bit by the end of the day
 
Like everyone else has said, that is awesome.

I'm assuming you all run indivudual trials instead on all at once like a normal race.

What other SUVs were there?
