I remember being in Germany when my father was stationed over there three times - Garmisch twice & Heidelberg once. We took over a 1973 Caprice Estate wagon; such a gas-swilling beast!
You should be okay, especially since it is much easier to ship parts and accessories now than it was back in the day. Also, European vehicles now use unleaded ( bleifrei ) gasoline......unlike back then. In the late '70s and into the '80s, USA-spec vehicles would have to have the catalytic converter removed.

Consider buying a new, factory-fresh BMW or Mercedes there before you come back to the USA. If you take one vehicle over with you, Uncle Sam will foot the bill to bring one back home. My father did this with a Volvo (catalytic converter laying in the trunk area) and saved mucho dinero. You avoid the extra markup that US dealers charge, although you'll be waiting a few weeks for your car to arrive when you return home.
You can order a car with US specs (different lights, bumpers, etc.) and are permitted to drive it in Europe until your tour of duty ends. Check with the US Consulate while you are there and see what the actual policy might be nowadays. I am sure they've changed things during the last twenty years.
Your 4Runner should do okay over there, but you may run into some trouble trying to sell it to anyone other than a US citizen on active military duty; again, because of the market differences and required vehicle specifications.
