08' 4runner SR5 4x4 V6

When I come to a complete stop, switch into neutral, switch into L4 I get a loud beeping noise that doesn't go away and then when I put the truck into gear I get a very loud grinding noise...

Am I doing something wrong here or is there something wrong with my 4runners 4x4?

If find you must be "established" (no blinking lights) in 4hi first. You are doing the transition to 4lo correctly. Sometimes I find letting it creep slightly while transitioning to 4lo can help. (Slight hill...)

Im not sure I understand? 4H seems to be ok, but I get a blinking light on the dash and a beeping noise that doesnt go away when I switch into L4, and then when I switch gears form N to Drive I get a very bad grinding sound.

Ok,

-go to 4hi
-place in N
-rotate selector from 4hi to 4lo

It sounds like you were rotating the switch and then putting it in N. It must be in N prior to rotating the switch.

I went from:

-Park

-Neutral

and then went straight to 4L, Beep...beep. beep with a blinking light on the dash

-Now I switch from N to Drive and get a GRIIIIIIIIIIND for 5 seconds or longer with the blinking light/beeping still going off.

I dunno... I think you may need to take it in to the dealer.

Me too . Do you know anything about CPO warranty's? My 4runner has a 7 yr./ 100k power train cpo warranty. Do you think I should be covered? I also thoguht I felt my tranny shifting hard into 3rd or 2nd (cant remember) I guess I should have them look into this as well?

Also, I just did a swap to synthetic in my motor... Will the dealership give me any sheyt for this? blame the problems they find on this synthetic? Also, if the grinding was caused by the operator, will the warranty still cover it? (not that I did anything wrong, it would have been from the previous owners)

Oh and what are the odds of me getting a loaner car form the dealership while the work is being done? Will Toyota take care of me?

I just bought a 2009 4x4 SR5 recently, and I was trying to go from 2H direcrtly to 4L, and was getting the beeping and blinking light on the dash. So I consulted the owner's manual. And according to the owner's manual, you are supposed to go from 2H to 4H, then to 4L (shifting while in neutral, then once in gear, letting the car move slowly a bit until it locks in, then back into neutral, then shift to the next gear). So once I go ino 4H before I go to 4L, I no longer have a problem. Your problem is in trying to go from 2H directly to 4L.

I get no grinding noises, even when I did it the wrong way, so I can't comment on that issue. Try doing it all in the correct order and see if the grinding noises go away. Good luck.

It should be covered. Unless you can duplicate the hard shift issue they'll say they'll check it out and do nothing but look for stored codes.

The grinding likely did no damage. I would change the t-case fluid by around 30k (rear axle too). You may have some extra metal in yours depending on how much grinding you did and it's worth getting it out of there but other than that don't worry about it. And I mean don't worry about it. Get the issue resolved, change the t-case fluid once in a while, exercise the t-case by cycling through all modes monthly and it'll last way beyond 200k with no issues.

You won't get one on day 1 IMHO. Day 2 or the day you take it back for whatever parts to be installed you will get one. Most dealers have great daily rates with Enterprise.

Is this practice "right"? Not IMHO it's just the way it is...

:iagree:Sequence is everything with this complicated but amazing 4wd system.

So your saying I will more then likely have to pay for a loaner (at a discount from enterprise)?

Any idea what my CPO warranty deductible will be? Do I need to pay to have the CPO warranty switched into my name? or should I just take the truck in and they will take care of me? ( I was told I had to call a phone number and pay $50 to get the CPO warranty transferred into my name, but didn't know if that was correct info or not)

I have never purchased a CPO Toyota.

Good luck!

Doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong. I think you might have the same problem I had about a year ago which is a broken/faulty switch. I did exactly what you did and was getting the same beeping noise which did not go away. I was basically stuck in 4LO and could not shift out of it. Have you tried putting it back in H4 and you still see the 4LO flashing on the dash and still hear the beeping, it doesn't feel smooth shifting from N to Drive and when you start driving your rpms are extremely high at 15 or 20mph?? If so then you are actually in 4LO and stuck in it and your switch needs to be replaced. Luckily my extended warranty paid for this including towing to the dealership since driving in 4LO was not an option. The dealer didn't do anything other than replace the switch. Hopefully this info helps you to resolve this issue.

Had the same problem- when going into 4lo heard grinding and lights beeping. happened twice.
I learned IF it happens, stop, go back to N, put into 4hi, shift into reverse and drive for 2-5 feet, stop, shift into N, put into 4lo, it should engage with no grinding or lights beeping and all done -for me this has worked hope it works for you.
Normally, I have had no problem going into 4lo but only twice this has happened this solves it.
I heard it from some T4R guy on here but it was a while ago- thank you unknow T4R guy thank you
