08 Low Beams H11 to H9

well, while the H9 is brighter than the H11, its way below the lumen out put of the HIDs,& is much whiter than the H11. remember the OP stated he didnt want to get caught with the HIDs in his state since its a fine & is reflected on his insurance. the H9 will pass a quick roadside inspection, & is not overlly bright, think of it as somewhere between the H11 & HIDs. personally, even with the projector, i fine HIDs are too bright to oncoming traffic even when aimed low, but then im an old sob whos eyes arent what they use to be. just for a quick note, since i didnt have time to look up the exact #s, the stock H11 = around 1350 lumens, a plus bulb = around 1800, the H9 = around 2100, & im fairly sure the HIDs are over 3000.

Hello my friend,

I did not want to go with HIDs, primarily due to the legality issue as I am also a Constable. It is not legal to make that modification in MA. A ticket given by any LEO with a burr up his butt would be a serious increase in insurance here in MA. Also, I personally do not like the blinding light from HIDs on other vehicles as it is sometimes blinding. I feel it is a safety risk for my family. I am sure I will get flamed by those who spend hundreds of dollars on them.

I have not taken any pics. If Eskimoass thinks that makes my pics worthless, so be it.

I Live in MA too and I know exactly what you you are talking about when it comes to the cops especially the small town cops. That is why I keep everything legit when it comes to mods. Picky inspectors who do everything by the book will also fail you when it comes time for annual vehicle inspection unless it's a mod that can be swapped out easily and back just to avoid the hassle. Most cars with factory HID's produce a minimal amount of glare. The modified lenses/housings that were not originally manufactured for HID applications can sometimes be a problem since they scatter light in unwanted directions which can temporary blind an oncoming driver. Even with HID's improper headlight aiming can produce the same effect too.

Resurrecting this awesome thread and mod,...

Received the H9s from Candlepower today. Took less than 5 minutes to mod each and mount in the T4R. Could not believe the useable light with these compared to the stock bulbs. They are so bright!

Hope I don't get flashed, unless it's a hot chik:happy bda.

I realize this is for an 06+ mod. Any ideas on the best way to get most light out of a bulb in the 04 stock housing? I upgraded the bulbs but it still seems to strain. Planning on getting off road lights, but I can't use those on the road.

good price but you may want to check into how many hours they are rated at. it varies from brand to brand, when i got mine NARVA bulbs seemed to have the longest lasting time.

Got around to installing the bulbs this weekend. Easy modification to the bulb socket with a Dremel tool, then the bulbs fit right in. No need to modify the metal tabs on the bulb.

These are a worthwhile improvement in brightness over the stock bulbs. My stock bulbs have been in the 4Runner since new (4 years old), so they may have dimmed a bit over time too.

For $14, do it.

Just got an 08 4Runner and the first thing I want to do is upgrade the headlights.

Wanted to get some feedback from anyone who has done this mod. Any long-term issues that have arisen, i.e. projector housing damage, wire damage, early burn-outs?

Would like to upgrade low beams, high beams, and fog lights so that they are all the same color temp. So I can cut-off the extra tab on the H9 to replace my H11 low-beam. How about the high-beam and fog lights?

I've done it, my bulbs burnt out after a few years but I always had my lights on 24/7. So if u don't do that it will last a lot longer. For the highs and cogs check out HIR bulbs, I have done so and love it! No damage or issues with my system.

I am the original poster. I did this mod and went a few years no problem. About 6 months ago I installed H11 size HIDs from DDMTUNING and love them better. Since they are only 35W (less than the H11s) I didnt even use a relay, much better and been running great. I havent dont the fogs, not sure where a good place to mount the ballast is, also worried about the road water, salt, etc...

What color temp did you go with? I went with 35w 5000k and love them. They are def bluer than i thought (not too blue tho), but still great great lights.

I have been debating on putting either matching 5000k's or 3000k's in the fogs, but I really feel the lows are plenty bright for me. I have been looking into either HIR's or color matching led fogs from vleds. Its tough to not go the ddm route with those prices tho...
