Hello all,

Hopefully not to dumb of a ques, but just replaced our totaled 99 with the 08. New bells and whistles. Having an issue with the auto temp control and not sure if it is the way it operates or there is an issue. Ofcourse the manual is silent.

When I start up the vehicle and put the temp to HI and hit auto, nothing happens.

what I have noticed is if I am driving and do that, the fan with come up and the auto will kick in. Very strange.

Two other issues I have noticed is that when I hit auto, the a/c light comes on, which I am able to turn of without disengaging the auto function.

Also, if I choose any other setting but air directed at the feet, it shuts down the auto function.

Can anyone shed anylight on the above, is this simiilar to everyone elses exp, or is there potentially an issue?

My '04 does the same things.

When set to "Auto" the blower might not be starting up right away if the engine hasn't warmed up yet (the air that gets blown into the cabin is warmed by the engine, I think).

Also (just learned this on these forums) the rear vents only blow air if the mode for blowing air at your face is selected (either face only or face + floor).

You wont get any hot air right when you start up the motor.. The auto system knows this, and waits until the coolant from the motor is hot, which is routed thru the heater core.. and your blower blows air thru the heater core making the air warm... so rather than blowing cold air on you right away, it keeps the fan off until that core is warm. normally the second you see the temp needle move on the dash, the air should be blowing on your feet... and the more the needle goes up the harder the fan will start to blow.

hope that helps

This is helpful thank you. Was worried that maybe it was not functioning right, but I guess it is smarter than me. Last night I noticed that it went top and bottom vent, I guess it knows when to do this? Also when I put it on it comes on with the AC on, does this half to stay on, I noticed I can hit the AC button and the light will go off without disengaging the auto function

by default it will turn the AC on, you can turn it off and retain the auto. in the winter its on to take moisture out of the air and keep the windows unfogged.. summer, for extra cooling.. i think it will cycle the ac compressor on and off on its own to regulate the temp as well.. so its not on all the time.. just in stints to retain the temp.

and yes it will move from feet, to combo, to top vents on its own.. based on "heat rising" and cool air falling.. it is a smart system.

with our lexus my wife always turns the auto off and does her own thing, but i use the same "several Japanese computers are smarter than your judgment"

she doesn't like when i say it :)

all in all, i love auto climate control, im excited to get our 4runner (my 02 was manual CC) and our tacoma now is manual too..
