08 V8 4x4 - El Camaleon Azul

Took an overnighter spin out thru N. Death Valley. Camped at Saline- epic as always. Drove out North thru Steel Pass into Eureka Dunes, hitting it right at Sunset as we came thru Dedekera Canyon. Gorgeous trip with perfect Fall DV weather.

Parked above Marble Bath, on our way out Steel Pass

Arrived at Eureka Dunes just past sunset. Took a nice night-hike up to the top with my daughter and ChocoLab Pup. Wifey took a nap in the Runner :)
In our own beds by 10pm. Long quick trip

Upgrade time!

Picked up a driverside rear window rack from a company that makes FJC Equip. They've started making some 4th/5th ten runner gear too. But I'm gonna say they are not REALLY building it rig specific. Im not entirely foreign to working on and installing gear on rigs, this rack was a total PITA to fit up and i had to mod a few parts to get it to fit right and tight. All good now, and I'm happy with how it has turned out, but its a simple window rack, should just bolt right in if its being sold as a model specific rack. Buyer be aware.
Orange Boxx Fabrication
I happen to have picked mine up off a guy that bought it, and was fed up with it. Paid ~half $$. Still felt expensive after i was done ;(
States it holds 35#, 11G metal, built to hold Molle and Quick fist gear. It does.

Rack on and secure in 3points. should be 4. I pulled mine in a bit on the bottom to maximize cabin space. (shortened the delrin spacers) I also drilled one out fully to allow me to instal a full thru bolt- instead of it just leaning into the wall of the 4runner as a brace.

IMG_4455_zpszgqraa2w.jpg~original

Starting to load it up. So far- small shovel held with 2 quickfists, machete zip tied, Molle bag with 1Q oil/1Q ATF/roll Gorilla tape/~30zip ties/mossy repellant/bag of spare bolts n nuts, paper towel roll, mex. blanket slipped behind rack in window pocket, window shield tucked tightly behind rack, ice scraper bungeed to shovel.
Plan to add a large first aid bag in open area, and possibly a tow strap.

IMG_4491_zpsrhotuqai.jpg~original

all done, i think it is a nice addition and has cleared up quite a bit of clutter in the rig. It is holding everything solid and does not rattle as it sits now. Not sure i would purchase it at full pop, or even half off- until they address the mounting issues and make the rack look as though it is cut to fit the 4th gen. Happy i have a window rack though.

^^^^ sorry to took so long for me to check my thread/respond :)

i actually plan to hit my sunroof rust in this way in the near, before Winter sets in, future!
Ill post up my results

a shot of my alignment specs post suspension/wheels/brake replacements, for my personal future reference :)

Why weren't they able to bring caster into spec? You should have a heck of a lot more than that...

Ate Thai in bishop for dinner Sunday night

Life rough. Great weekend. Im sore

Surprised you didn't get more caster from those UCAs.

Why weren't they able to bring caster into spec? You should have a heck of a lot more than that...

Took me long enough to answer :wtf:

So, this is just my opinion. Formed from reading and playing in the dirt.

So caster set to factory spec is great for highway speeds on pavement. Keeps the rig from feeling twitchy, makes your steering somewhat sluggish or "heavy"
Too much caster and your steering is HEAVY, too little and you have an erratic twitchy drive that can be dangerous and unstable.

If your caster is set higher -at slow speed it drags your tires thru corners, increases your turning radius, wears your tires(if your turning) quicker, and PUSHES your front end thru the corner.
These are all sucky traits offroad. They also happen to suck in the snow and ice during winter driving.

So, my caster is set at a point where i still have a very stable drive on the highway. Very reactive, but stable. But, i don't get scrub at slow speed, turning radius is short, and when i point my front end somewhere, thats where it goes instead of pushing a few inches pst that spot.

I like it. Maybe others should give it a try. Some have. And i might try something different some day. Only one alignment at a time.

Share your opinions and EXPERIENCES. Were all here to mod and play with our goodies, factory is nice but.......

buy it, build it, break it!!!!! then mod it some more :art:

Love your wheel/tire fitment. What are the specs on the wheels? Are you running those spidertrax wheel spacers as well?

Also might have missed it, where did you get the extended rear sway bar end links?

Thanks bud. heres the info. guess i never once said anything about my wheel/tire setup

Mike builds and sells them here on the board. Bomber hardware, simple install. I could have put it all together myself, but...... Mikes got it done, install, forget. thanks MStudt

great traction in the ice/snow so far.
I did slash a sidewall nicely in Death Valley riverbed. But i was rallying a bit fast. :police:

Beadlock install- my thoughts.

I always pound a grove/notch in the inner bead retention hump to give the tire bead something extra to grab onto before it slips over the hump. Makes a big difference keeping the inner bead from popping when your aired down. ~1.5" apart all the way around. Learned it from a baja legend.

IMG_3570_zpscdtpibyd.jpg~original

spit on your inner tire bead little, and push the front of the rim thru the inside wall.

IMG_3572_zpsywt4usdy.jpg~original

now set it on a 5gal. bucket face up.

IMG_3573_zpsf7nukpxg.jpg~original

Carefully line up your tire bead centered on the bead ring of the wheel.
Lay the lock ring over the tire, again centering it on the wheel and bolt holes visually.
I mark with nail polish the ring and wheel at 15* increments using 2 colors so i can remember my bolt tightening sequences.
i use copper anti-seize on all bolts.

insert 4 bolts at 15* each and finger tighten on opposites. insert 8 more between those bolts and finger tighten
Now, criss-crossing back and forth and at 30min. on your clock of bolts, start tightening to 5#, then 10# all bolts. Once your hand tight- Use a torque wrench!!!!
Like the proper lug nut sequence, only WAY more bolts. Idea is to never over tighten one section and cause the lock ring to start slipping to one side. this will cause wheel imbalance.
once at 10#, i thread rest of bolts in and tighten same way.
Final sequence torque to 15#.
recheck your torques on every bolt till they are all at 15-17'#
Takes forever. but its done correctly and may even balance well if you did it right.

IMG_3574_zps3kzeslf6.jpg~original

How i balanced my wheels.
The ceramic beads seem to do a great job. Not always perfect balance but usually pretty good and the best part is it self corrects with tire plugs, chunking, ice/dirt in your wheels, tire rotation when aired down(this one shouldn't happen if your deadlocks are working), standard tire wear. No rebalance needed.
Ive never tried them, till now, on a more street driven rig. They work amazing on my 37" Pitbulls/beadlocks that i run on my crawler, but it sees way more dirt and rocks than pavement.

IMG_3576_zpsbi07dwfa.jpg~original

once you pour in the beads, thru the backside of the rim. pull your valve core, wet the rear bead a small bit with slightly soapy water, and fill the tire till the rear bead pops on, pressure down to ~30# immediately.

Deadly post. Lots of very good info that I'll be referencing here soon. Thanks for the tip on pounding a notch on the groove also!

What size spacers do you have kicking around?

I'm going the OMF beadlock conversion route. My wheels are definitely not as aggressive, which is why I'm contemplating running wheel spacers. Although I may need to run some custom Bora spacers at 0.5" or 0.75" to get the backspacing I'm after (similar to yours).

Did you measure the 295 Coopers height wise? Curious how tall they actually run once mounted. I'm looking at STT Pro's and ST Maxx in either that size or 315's. Leaning towards the 295's to retain some driveability and post-pone the re-gear. What are you impressions vs. stock with the 295's?

Appreciate all the info. Your a step ahead of me so I might as well use it to my advantage! hahah

Spidertrax blue spacers. 1.25"

I believe the tires were about 33.25x11.5 mounted up at 35psi on the 9.5" wheels. but that might be a scosh off.

with the v8, i think gearing is just fine with ~33" tires. Noticeable, but plenty of torque.
If it was 35"s id want the 4.88s.
Ill be bumping up to 4.88 when i pop for the 9.5" diamond rear axle and FROR redesigns the front axle configuration to accept a HP FJ80 8"third :)
but thats a different post :flock:

I'm not talking big jumps! Just get it off the ground a few inches! It's fun. You've got more than the setup to do it. I do it with Bilsteins and eBay UCAs and I don't break shit nearly as much as T-Man does!

I think that you're going to start to recognize what your rig is actually capable of. Mine still blows me away with what it can do.

I appreciate your reply regarding the LCAs. I have been plagued with issues with mine ever since attempting to align after lifting. We discovered seized bolts, so replacing them and the bushings was in order. I believe too much heat and force was used in the process, and some things may have gotten bent outta whack in the process. In fact, I just got an alignment done a couple days ago, and tonight i decided to tack weld my adjustment cams in place. I made sure to tack them in such a way that they won't cause too much trouble when I do have to remove them further on in my build.

Keep up the good work, and don't be afraid to push your truck! Just start slow, learn to utilize ATRAC and there isn't much your truck won't be able to get through!
:flipoff::lalala::girl:
Not sure how I never seen this! lol

Holy Chit!! How the Flock of Geese did I miss your thread!!??? Looking great man, gave me some ideas too. Keep it up bud!

awesome build! those raceline's are money! you're making me want to rip apart the front and rear end and go crazy with a wire wheel and some new paint!

this is awesome I've never heard or seen this ever before, thanks for the tip, how oldschool is this baja legend you speak of hahah :thumb:

He's like a Ninja Warrior, you'd never know it until its too late.

the concept is simple.
Scoring the aluminum on the inside of the bead roll helps to keep the inner bead of the tire from rolling off when your aired down. It gives the tire bead a little more to bite onto as it slips off the wheel.
Does it make a HUGE difference? No. But it could be the difference in popping an inner bead.
There are double deadlock wheels if your wicked hardcore :uzi:

Do IT!!
