$100 Walmart Roof rack?

So I was strolling through my local wally world, thinking about all the Chinese children who worked hard to provide me with so many low cost products in a single store... ainkiller:

I was in the sporting goods section (looking for .22LR :flypig: ),You know... right where it kinda turns into automotive... when I saw it...

So I go in for a closer look...

Anyone use this? Seems like it would be a good entry level basket maybe. I was thinking it would be cool to get this and modify it to fit a 4R...

For $100 Id say it's not bad. The cheaper ones however tend to rust easily, so I'd recommend greasing up any holes or joints that would be prone to rust.

Yeah thats not bad.

Either way, for the price you can chop it up, make it fit a little better, make it bigger etc.

I mean... I want a thousand dollar roof rack as much as the next guy.... But I need a thousand dollars.

This is the same rack I have... in "stock" form it's not very long though, so I obtained an extra middle section which extended mine. For $100 it's great, not going to hold 600lbs of gear, but will have no issues with spare tires, coolers, or cargo boxes. I love mine.

Well.... I'm not proud of it, but I did what I had to do... LOL


I started off searching all over the web for a way to buy an additional mid section... couldn't find anything... However, I did find a part number for the middle section...

(couldn't just return the rack and buy a different brand either because it was a father's day gift and a total surprise and I didn't want to hurt feelings)

So I called the manufacturer and asked if I could purchase a "replacement" middle section, using the part number I had found... they refused to sell me one and told me they don't offer any replacement parts for this item and that if I needed to I should just return it to the store... Well, as you can imagine this really irritated me, because every other rack manufacturer I know of offers an extended middle section, or would at least sell you a "replacement" middle section to add in there to extend the rack... These people wouldn't, as they have a little deal worked out with Wal-Mart, obviously...

So I decided to "stick it to the man-ufacturer" and obtain an additional middle section the only way possible... I won't say how I got an additional middle section, but it is an actual middle section from a Reese rack, so there are two middle sections stuck together in my rack.

I'd make sure to fab up some of your own roof mounts. Just something that can slide onto the pre-existing roof rack rails, it'll help it stay lower to the roof and help gas mileage tremendously.

I was going to get the same roof rack that's at walmart so I did some research and found mix reviews on it most was like it rusting out or easily bending so I didn't get it I would rather just save and buy a good well known brand...just my saying about it...

Correct! The Rola racks are awesome and cheap and offer an additional middle section!

These reviews would be correct. Mine does leak a little rusty water after a rain or car wash.

I bought mine with one of these on it. It is in my garage, collecting dust. There was rusty water stains all over the 4runner from the leaking rusty water as described above.

Yeah, I've seen several of these rust and stain the trucks. I'd spend a little more $$$ on a better quality rack or at least dress that one up. Plug and repaint or plastidip the spots where water would get and use SS hardware.

I have one of these racks on my wife's Rav4, and the feed back is correct they do rust but given this is a MOD feast on here....I simply modded is and fixed the issue.
When you put it together, before you put the rubber pieces that cover the joints up where the bars meet together just wrap some electrical tape over it maybe once or twice. Problem solved, hasn't rusted since. I generally have about 150lbs of gear on it and it's fine. If you respect your gear and your rack while loading it and don't slam it around it will do the job. I would love a Gobi rack, but the expense simply doesn't meet my needs enough to cough up that much cake. My money will go to other more functional mods for my life style.
