10k oil change, sample taken...

I've been running synthetic on my 2005 V8 4x4. Last time it was penzoil platinum for about 7500 miles.
This time was Penzoil Ultra and I went a full 10k based on ALOT of reading saying our 4.7 V8's are very easy on the oil. So tonight I pulled a sample while draining. I ordered a kit from blackstone and will send it off as soon as it comes in! I grew up changing my Tacoma's oil every 3k miles like clockwork. So this will be interesting to see how my engine is being protected and what interval they recommend.

Anyone else had the V8 oil tested? What were your results?

I'll post back when I get the results in, should be a couple weeks at least.

I would be as concerned about the condition of the filter as well as the oil. Not sure if that is an issue. Are there filter designed to go that long without needing to be changed?

Amsoil has a 25K, once a year filter out there to marry up with their latest and greatest 25K oil.

AMSOIL - AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters (EaO, Ea15K)

I'll often go 10k miles on Mobil1 oil and filter but on occasion and depending on how much I've towed, I'll change it at 8-9k miles. I also do 8-10k mile changes on my Mustang with Amsoil oil & filter. My previous 2, T4R's were on 10k mile change frequencies. The 2nd gen was sold with 205k miles and the 3rd gen sold with 152k miles. Neither had any oil useage or compression issues.

I've considered oil analysis but figure for the trouble to pull the sample and cost to have the analysis performed I might as well just do the oil change.

I'm annoyed that I can't go over the 5K miles now, with my 4R being "certified" and having the lifetime warranty on the drivetrain, I can't use extended drain intervals.

I will have to think about that. I have 4 vehicles and it would be nice to cut back on some maintenance.

I would be leery of AMSOIL’s 25,000 mile filter, search Frenchie's "Blew my 03 V6 engine, then I found this..." in the Gen 4.

I've tested oil in all my vehicle for many years. The 4.7 is an amazing engine and is very gentle on oil (as most all Toyota engines). You can run ANY full synthetic for 10K miles. As far as the filter, the OEM or equivalent size aftermarket can also be run safely for 10K miles or one year without any issues. I used the Amsoil dual bypass system (0w-30) for 5 years/40K miles with the same oil (in the 4.7) and there was no end in sight. I’ve seen UOAs with 10K miles on the factory fill, for the 3.5 V6 and it was still safe to use.

All "Certified" T4R's don't have the "Lifetime Powertrain Warranty" do they? If so, I'm going to snag a Certified! (But I'm guessing you paid extra for that somehow?)

It's more the time than the money IMO. But should almost break even on the $.

I think it's worth it in the end. You can get 5qt jugs of synth for $27 at walmart which averages out to like $5.50/qt. You get better protection for your vehicle, you save the time and hassle of taking it in for the oil change or doing it youself every other time and you save the cost of one filter every other time (assuming you only run 10k mile OCI's).

sure you can. Just make log entries in that handy dandy chart in the glove box showing that you did oil changes in between the "actual oil changes"

Double interval is putting it lightly, this guy ran his oil 21,000 miles in a Sequoia which is the same V8 as the 4R. His last run was about 16,000 miles. If I drove more I would have ran mine long distance like that but I may deploy early so I dropped it after a mere 13 months and 8700 miles.

Well, they told me when I bought it I would need proper documentation, which includes receipts of either where I had it changed or the receipts for the oil. Still be something relatively hard to prove one way or the other.

And for the poster who asked if all certifieds have the lifetime warranty, I have no idea, I just know that's what mine came with. I'm sure it was built into the price of the vehicle somehow, but not sure.

Our Volvo XC90 is also certified, but it's much more detailed than Toyota's program. They replace a TON of stuff to "bring it up to new standards" then you get a 100K mile bumper to bumper warranty on it, zero deductible. They put new tires, brakes, rotors, ALL fluids are flushed and filled, you name it. It's a great program and has been rated the top certified used program in the country for back to back years.

The Lifetime drivetrain is nice on the 4R though, really nice.

Until I got into my Volvo, my standard oil change procedure was 10K miles = filter only, 20K miles = full change.
