10k too expensive for 140k, 4wd, elocker, limited?

Hi all,

Looking at a 2000 4Runner in CA (they're all expensive around here).
Specs -
140k
E Locker
4WD
Bone stock, still has running boards
Always garaged, paint is nearly perfect, no oxidation, still glossy
Limited, reupholstered leather seats
Clean title, no accidents
Sunroof
New tires
Timing belt done
Driven the last 13 years by an older woman
Will be inspected by Toyota dealer tomorrow

I used to have a runner, but it was 2wd, and I'm now looking to get one of these again as my weekend/camping car. I have been looking for ages, and I understand 10k is a bit much, but not sure a nearly perfect condition garaged 4Runner (with elocker & 4WD!) will come around again. Not too excited on dropping 10k on an older car, but I do have the cash for it, and my only other option for a 4wd that I like is a newer tacoma or 4runner and those are at LEAST mid 20s, which i do NOT have the money for because this will be a second car. I don't really see many other options honestly. Thoughts?

Sounds like what they are going for, 2000 limited in good shape. If anything I hear the price can get bid up higher than that for nice examples which this one seems to be. Pics?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a 2000 Limited will have multimode too, correct?
I think only 1999 and 2000 have both rear locker and multimode.
Makes it an even better deal.

Yes. If that's what he wants then he should seriously consider this one, just make sure underside is clean. I got mine for $2000 but it was a wreck... still a really nice truck.

Anyone arguing "these trucks just go for more" I would argue instead, look harder. There are so many 3rd gen 4Runners out there, literally one of the most common vehicles on the road even now. Everywhere in San Diego I see 3rd and 5th gens.

I tried contacting them before I got my ride with a cash offer like you mentioned and they didn’t bother replying back to me. :lol: People pay their asking price.

2wd and for the most part they’re people who buy from auctions clean them up a bit and sell them off. Buyer beware though it’s common practice for these sellers to change the odometer reading. I had a horrible experience happen to me with a 4runner I bought that was 117k miles on the odometer and I later come to find it actually had 255k miles. HUGE headache and stress. ALWAYS CARFAX!!!

Here’s my two cents. You seem to really like the truck and it sounds like it’s in great shape. Let’s pretend you could get an equivalent one for $7k -$8k if you looked long and hard and did a bunch of driving around. Is it worthwhile to save all that trouble and get this one now? Do what you really want to do. Not every good truck can be had for a great price. Sometimes you just gotta live.

That exact 4runner would probably list for about 9-11k in my area right now. I bought the exact 4runner, (2000 Limited, RR locker), with 89,000 miles for $10,000. You might be able to get him down to $8,000 if you can negotiate some

I agree. CL ads don't tell the truth and a lot of private dealers are buying at auction then barely cleaning the car up and selling it at a huge markup.

Is a used third gen (stock) that needs $5k in maintenance really worth $10k to purchase?

I don't even know where this $10k came from lately. For years and years a truck like that would be worth $7,000.

If I had to start over from scratch I'd probably just buy a new Tacoma 4wd on sale in December for $32-34K before I'd give over $10K for a truck that the bank says is worth $5K and needs another $5k in maintenance to make it another 50-75k miles and still drive well.

The cash offer thing only works in person with the cash. Over the phone or email a cash offer is just talk.

That'd be a decent price for that truck IF it was really well taken care of. If it was a private seller and they had great service records OR they did the work themselves and you had very good reason to trust them, then maybe go for it.

But a dealer? Nope. They got to make their money somewhere. If they're asking 10k that truck is likely worth closer to 7. The dishonest ones will go out of their way to hide or ignore serious issues. Even the honest ones might not know about issues that the PO would.

I got my rust-free 2000 limited 4x4 multimode with e-locker 180k miles last year for $4500. It needed minor cleaning and only really needed about $1000 in parts although I put more into it for peace of mind, radiator, LBJs, springs and shocks and other misc stuff that really didn't have to be done. I took it on a 6 hour road trip the day after I bought it without any work done on it and it never had any issue.

It would be 10k IF all checks out, otherwise seller will negotiate based on any repairs needed. I'm all too familiar with buying one of these and then dumping 4k into it (learned my lesson -- which is why I am getting it checked by dealer!)

This is a private party sale. Not dealer. Yes, I realize it's expensive. I'm really on the fence about it. Hope to get a few more replies. He won't go lower than 10k for now. I know another one this clean won't come around, and if it does, it'll probably be just as expensive.

Sure, I can spend some more time looking for one that's 6k, but as others have mentioned, could be super beat up and need a lot of work. These damn things are expensive, 19 years later.... Decisions... Lol

From my experience fixing mine up, what is your time worth?
Mine had rust that needed to be dealt with. For a few thousand extra for a clean truck with few problems, I think I'd pay the few thousand dollars..
