I have a 2000 4runner limited. My key is so worn out that it can't turn the ignition cylinder. I have one spare key that works (original), and I got 2x new ones cut but they need to be programmed. The new cut ones turn the cylinder perfectly but the car obviously won't start (starter turns) because of the immobilizer. So it's not the cylinder that's the issue.
Dropped the car off at the stealership to do the programming, and they called me saying they weren't able to do it. Apparently they have to flash the new key into the ECM's little database and when they attempt to do that it just says "connection lost" on their system.
My truck is in perfect working condition, 200k miles, always garaged, zero electrical issues. I find it really hard to believe that they can't do this. What options do I have here?
