’11 SR5 trans cooler?

Hey friends.
I bought an ’11 SR5 w/ a 2” rear reciever. I don’t know if a "trailor tow package” was standard or a 2” rear reciever is standard but very used 4Runner I saw had a rear reciever.
The reason I ask is I need mine to have a heavy duty trans cooler. Not that I’ll tow, but I will drive quite a lot on the beach. This heats up the trans quite a bit & as we know this is bad news. My dealer (used car dealer - Car Sense) can’t tell me, as in they don’t know, if it has a trans cooler or not. They said they called Toyota and they couldn’t determin if it did or not. Hard to believe.
Can you folks shed some light on this for me please? Does it have a sufficient trans cooler? Should I add one or a heavier duty one? I’ve also heard that over cooling is just as bad us under cooling, especaially in the winter.

To help you out a bit and put in you in the right direction, to answer your question, all 5th gens have an integrated trans cooler at the bottom of the radiator. It is built in with the radiator and not a separate unit. On the 4th gens, a separate unit was offered, but only for the V8 models.

Just this past weekend I installed a separate trans cooler and did a lot of research about which one to get, where to position, and how to hook it up. I will share with you my findings and what helped me out. Some of them are from FJ forums, but the 4Runners, FJs, and Tacomas all have the same configuration.

Trans Cooler I bought from Amazon. Get the "Frequently Bought Together" package as you will need more hose:

After install, drive the car around and make sure you go through all gears. Check for leaks and fill fluid as needed.

I did go to the local Toyota dealership to get a Qt of Trans fluid before install. I took off the overflow plug and fill plug at the same time. Nothing was coming out of the overflow at all. I only had to add less than a Qt before it started coming out of the overflow. Drove it around one more time, let it cool and checked again. Did not have to add any more fluid.

You won't have any issue with the trans temp if not towing.. Just use the right gear, 4LO... The main heat source in the trans is the converter running unlocked... Holding a lower gear usually helps.

Just remember, trans fluid temp (104 -113°F) to accurately check the fluid level.
 
Trans Cooler Line ID

Hello everyone,

I don't have the requisite number of posts to start a new thread so I'll bring this one back to life.

I'm getting ready to install a Hayden AT cooler in my 5th gen (2017 Off Road). The information linked above and in other threads has been very helpful, but I would like to clarify/confirm the identity of the line I'll want to tie into in order to run the cooler after the factory unit in the radiator.

The lines near the top of the radiator on the passenger side are clearly marked with red and blue paint stripes, which I understand to mean the hot line (to the radiator cooler) and outlet from that cooler (currently, to the transmission), respectively.

I am assuming I would tie into the blue line as input to the aux cooler, but when I look at the lines at the transmission end, the one identified with blue up by the radiator is marked with red at the transmission. The other line at the transmission is either unmarked or has some yellow marking. See attached photos. Should I ignore the color coding at the transmission?

Any help in clarifying appreciated.

Bumping to add my photo links to my original question. My main point of confusion is that the line marked with blue up near the top of the radiator is marked with red down below at the transmission. I assumed the blue marking meant this was the output from the factory cooler in the radiator, and the red mark at the transmission is making me doubt this.

The paint is there as match marks for hose to pipe and clamp placement not really a temperature key. The Blue up top just happens to be on the cooler out line.
The flow is from the cooler out on the driver side of the radiator, up the extender piping, and into the transmission on the upper hard pipe.
The fluid is pumped OUT of the transmission on the lower connection on the side of the transmission.

Make it easy on yourself and avoid the cramped space of the side pipes and hoses. Grab the fluid where it exits the radiator on the driver side, send it to your add-on cooler and back into the return hose.

Be very careful not to put ANY side force on the aluminum pipes or you will be buying a new one.
