Hello all,

I have had this issue since purchasing my car, but have neglected to address it until now. My 115v "outlet" in the center console won't power anything. Plugging in a simple phone charger blows the fuse. I have already pulled the back "plastics" to access the 115v inverter, but am unsure of how to test if it is working. I would much prefer that than having to chase down a short!

Also, if my inverter IS dead, would it be smart to also upgrade the inverter? If so any suggestions on size/brand/type/etc?

Or if someone could direct me to somewhere in the FSM where it discusses diagnosing the inverter? I have tried searching through that and the wiring diagram dwnload but can only find the wire runs/connectors, etc. Thanks for any help
 
I've never been able to get mine to work either. I did leave the switch on overnight one time and it drained my battery, so I assume its shorted out or the inverter is shot. I'd be interested in what you find.

Hey. Obviously, the best way to test the inverter is with a multimeter. But before you start, has the vehicle been modded at all by the previous owner? Considering the symptoms, it actually sounds like a bad inverter. But here are some steps to help diagnose.

Start by turning on the inverter with the switch (ign on), and simply check voltage at the receptacle. It'll probably read between 110 & 116VAC. Regardless if it's good or bad, I would then remove the panel that mounts in front of the console storage box (between the front seats) so you can get to the receptacle plug wiring & inspect it, and shake it around to see if anything happens.

Pull the rear driver's side trim panel so you can get to the inverter. Again check the voltage coming OUT of the inverter. There is only one plug for the inverter (pins 3 & 7. Red with white trace, and light green). You should have approx. 115VAC.

If the voltage was bad at either point you checked, check to ensure you are getting good power TO the inverter. You should have approx. 14.4VDC on pin 1 (or the violet with red trace wire) with the engine running. Then check pin 4 (white with black trace) to ground. You should have around .4 ohms or less.

Remember, just because it's in the car doesn't mean it can't give you a nasty bite! That's the same voltage that operates your household items. And if it is malfunctioning, you really don't know what the current is coming out of it. These aren't rated very high, but it doesn't take much if it hits you in the right spot.

Current would be the next thing to check. But you will have to pop a pin (contact) out somewhere between the inverter and receptacle so that you can place the meter in the circuit, and again for the input power. If you are talented enough and confident enough, then proceed. I can give you tips for that, or I'm sure there are plenty others who would as well.

I don't know how your leaving the inverter switch on drained your battery. It is designed and wired to disconnect power when the vehicle shuts off through the relay.
Unless you have done the full time power mod, which is where you remove the inverter relay and replace the contact points with a wire jumper, leaving the inverter switch "on" overnight won't drain your battery.

Well, I was camping that night so it could have been several things, but after I got a jump and was driving out I noticed the switch still on. Thanks for the detailed troubleshooting plan, If it ever stops raining here in Texas I'll start digging around.
 
So it looks like my inverter has failed. I will add a poll to this to see what everyone thinks for going forward. Thanks for the help thus far!
 
When I decided to add an OEM inverter to my 04 SE that didn't come with one originally I found an inverter on eBay that was from a Toyota Matrix for $30 and it worked fine. For whatever reason they're much cheaper than the ones you find on eBay that are "for 4runners".

I noticed that they looked similar when I stumbled across one on ebay some time ago...

Here is a bump for a few more "poll votes" and also to ask this question: If I go with a second hand OEM inverter, whats your opinion on likelihood of the same issue re-occurring?
