11k too much for a 2002??

A rare color doesn't add $1,000 (in this case $4,000) value over KBB.

The older cars get, rare colors do add value because those colors are even more rare. People pay extra for little things like that.

Im not saying 3rd gen 4runners are rare, but one day soon the ones we want will be.

A fairly stock good condition 1st gen 4runner can still sell for $3k. :thumb:

After all that being said, i think 11k is too much for a 2002 with that mileage... That guy must be looking at dealer prices which are usually about $2k over private party values.

be patient and keep looking. you will find what you are looking for for a fair price within 2 months. CL and this forum, although the good stuff here goes fast.
I have been following this permalink and cannot understand why not a single person has bought it yet, or even inquired about it. It has the diff lock, the maintenance, all the stuff. I have no connection to the seller, just want to point out a nice 4R. I suspect his price is pretty negotiable at this point. i consider 99's more desirable not just for elocker, but because they seem to have the highest stock ground clearance. 2000-02 were dropped an inch due to the 'rollover' issue at the time

The car which the OP the originally linked for sale was a nice looking 2002 with no visible damage, 4x4 and had 150k miles (according to one of the posts) and was listed for $11,000

I've noticed a lot of people over listing their cars in California and especially on this site. It is what is and will continue to occur.

Let's look at a few things that WILL very likely NEED REPLACING between 150k and 200k miles, basically the next 48 months on that car.

At a decent mechanic with OEM parts:
* Timing Belt and WP at 180k miles ($600 best case)
* Radiator ($375 best case)
* Complete Suspension ($600 - $1000 for OEM)
* Front brake rotors & pads ($500, less if you DIY)
* Lower Ball Joints ($375)
* Spark plugs and wires ($250+)
* Steering Rack | Remanu Rack w/ warranty ($500-650)
* Rear Axel Seals ($700-$1100)
* Valve cover gaskets ($400+)

Easily over $3000 in maintenance and that's if you can find a good mechanic that charges less than dealer prices to work on the car.

The above is just to keep the truck running well, it doesn't include mods or major failures like a head gasket which can and do occur as a simple search will reveal.

Ha, I only paid $5,400 (if I remember correctly) for my '99 4x4 Limited. Although it had 190k miles when I bought it. That was in September of 2012.

Why is a sport worth more than a limited? I've never heard that before. I do like the color matching though.

As someone who is currently trying to sell his 4Runner is there a chance you are a bit biased? (Just checking)

Uh Since always? Supply and Demand my good buddy. Go look at any of the big auto sales websites (autotrader, carsdirect) 9/10 of the 4runners for sale are limiteds.

And yes good rare colors do add value. What planet are you from?

And as far as my 4runner, there's no harm in informing the public of the truth :P

That wasn't the case when I was in the market for a Limited about a year ago (when my '97 got smashed :( ) SR5s were everywhere, but Limiteds were a little tougher to find (but by no means impossible).

I don't think it adds that much value to a 10+ year old vehicle... It's not like these are collector cars or anything. People simply don't care as much about "rare paint schemes" on a vehicle this old. The only people who do, are 4Runner fanatics like ourselves, which are few and far between in the grand scheme of things.

What planet are you from?

I guess not the same one as you? :flipoff:

So you would pay the same amount for an ugly desert dune 4runner as you would a golden pearl or an Autumn Blaze or a thundercloud?

Yeah didnt think so, welcome back to earth.

Um, you're taking one specific scenario, and applying your conclusion to a much more generalized question. Why only use the "ugly" desert dune in your example, when there are whites, greens, reds, blacks, etc. available? Is your average consumer going to pay a fistload more money to get a "rare paint scheme" as opposed to something more common on a 10+ year old SUV?

Yeah didn't think so, welcome back to earth.

yes they are.

But hey I dont tell you what to do with your money, some people like white cars..

I agree with Ripcord. Color plays a huge part in what car people buy, especially when they are willing to pay a premium for one. Yes our SUV's are 10+ years old, but people still like certain colors and repainting a car isn't cheap at all. If you are going for the cheapest 4runner you can find, then yes color shouldn't matter since you are looking for the best deal, not your ideal 4runner. When you are planning on spending 8-10k on a 4runner I'd definitely get the color I'd want and the Thundercloud is a rare color. I see so many white and evergreen 4runners around, but only see about 3-4 Thunderclouds in a week. That says something and it's an appeal others are willing to pay to stand out and be a bit different.

In regards to Sports being more desirable than limiteds I completely agree to the right person. The sports have color matched bumpers, hood scoop, manual HVAC (the limited electronic one kind of sucks) and the 2002 sports were the least produced and were the only years to offer thundercloud, sunfire red and the blurple color. Most people don't like (myself included) the two tones of the limiteds and the look of the cladding on the doors.

I see what you're saying, but I still think you are the exception, not the rule. Your average Joe, who makes up the majority of the buying market when looking for a 10+ old SUV, isn't going to be so particularly committed to buying just that one color. Most people are going to look for the options they want (mileage, 4x4, manual vs. auto, trim levels, sunroof, etc.) and then when they find what they want, they determine if the color is acceptable (Joe might find a 4Runner with all the options he likes, but doesn't care for the baby blue paint, so he passes. Then he finds another with the options he wants, this time in black, so he figures black is fine for him, so he takes). Again, this isn't how everyone shops, but I truely believe this is how the majority does when used car shopping. I really think that in older cars, "rare" color schemes might be worth a couple hundred dollars MAX, but certainly not $1,000 (or more).

I think you just made their point, though. A vehicle is worth what SOMEONE will pay for it. Even if that person is the ONLY one who'd pay that...ie. the color-obsessed dude...the exception, in your words.

:deadhorse:

Yeah. I don't think Robb realizes how many exceptions there are to his "average Joe" rule. Car enthusiasts will always drive prices up. Car companies sell new cars and charge $5k+ for certain colors now. Are you saying they won't be worth more 10 years from note.

Wtf I have to pay extra to buy a BMW M3 with dull non-shiny paint!? Preposterous! people don't pay extra for those kinds of things :yawn:

Those of you who say it is worth multiple thousands more than KBB excelent value .....

How many cars have you actually sold?

Not saying IT IS worth thousands more! I've bought and sold over 2 dozen cars and trucks over the years, most of them modded out in one way or another, on some I've made money, but most I've lost! I just sold a Tundra for 3k over KBB, I thought it was worth it and so did the buyer! Let me ask you this, if you were to list a car for sale wouldn't you start off high and say the price is firm? And those saying there are a ton of 4Runners out there, you are correct! But most of them are crap! So if you find one and its near perfect you are going to pay! Would I spend 11k on this? Nope! But if it were everything I wanted in a 4runner I would put in a offer at KBB value and try to negotiate from there.

I buy and sell cars. So let's just say I've dealt with plenty of title transfers. I also list cars for sale for my bosses who are car dealers here in socal so I've seen a myriad amount of mint condition cars go for above blue book.

If you sell a car with a stack of paperwork showing every single thing done to the car with maintenance from day one, that in itself is worth money for those looming for peace of mind on a used car purchase

There's a big difference between someone saying they did this and that and from someone showing you they did this and that.

That being said. CL is full of car flippers who sell crap.

one Friday I looked up 10 vin#s and 7 had rolled back odometers. That's an extreme example it's not always that bad.
