12 vs. 2 10's

Hey guys,
So I have two Kenwood 10's that im debating putting in my 97 Runner. I want to know for those of you that have 10's and then for those of you that have one 12, which sounds better and how is the space in the back and what brand you like? Im considering selling my 2 10's in for 1 12 but not sure of the sound and space and all that......well let me know what ya think!!!

It really depends also on the box type and the amount of power you're puhsing. Generally speaking, two 10's will be cleaner and punch harder (more cone area). The 12 will pick up the lows a little better. You'd definitely save some space in the cargo area with the 12, and it'd still sound good, so if that's a concern then the 12 may be better.

It's impossible to know. Like ARK was saying there are so many factors.

What kind of Kenwoods? What kind of amp do you have? Prefab box?

I cant tell you then Kenwoods exact model and all that (at work) but I had them in my jeep before I plan on putting them in my runner(maybe) I loved the sound of them and all that they just took up a lot of space so thats why I was thinking of putting in a 12, ya know? and I listen to everything mostly rap and rock tho.

I think you would be happy with a single 12. You might want to throw some more power at it though.

You could also step up to a 15". That would impress a lot of people.

Possibly a single 12 that works well in a small ported enclosure? I know sealed would take up less space, but going ported would definitely help output and be closer to what you're getting with the 2 10's. If you're happy with what you have, why spend more moeny and swap? If the space is really that big of an issue, then it is justified and and easy choice IMO. Myself, I'm gonna be installing an amp and a 8" sub (in factory location) this weekend, mainly because I just can't sacrifice enough space for even one sub in the rear. All depends on priorities.

It sounds like you just need to find someone locally to build you just a tall wide box that is narrow to fit your space better! I have 2 10" Audiobahn AW 1000X that handle 600W RMS being pushed by a Crunch 600W amp @ 4ohms in Mono (THat's my setup).

I love my setup, I would do 2 12's if I had the speakers, but as you know 2 10's can be powerful if driven properly!

The 2 10s will simply move more air than the single 12 and they usually have a tighter punch too. I prefer 10s over any other size because I like clean bass. I only have 1 now but I had 3 in my old runner and it destroyed any 2 12 setup. I prefer sealed enclosures myself, ports can be difficult to tune and bandpass is just sloppy. I think you would be disappointed going from 2 10s to 1 12, although the right 12 in the right enclosure can be a great setup, just don't expect to gain more by using less.

004 you are wrong about smaller subs producing tighter bass. An 18" could sounds the same or even better than a 10". It's all about how the sub is made. In general though, I would agree that smaller equals cleaner.

One of the biggest factors in the whole set up is the box. So just make sure that you get a good one.

It's a general concept assuming apples to apples comparison. But yeah you can get the ultra clean bass in a monster application if you have the money, and the space : I'm partial to 10s because I feel they give better quality bass at high output in smaller applications for less money than comparable 12s.

for rap, a good set up would be one kicker 12 CVX or two 10 alpine type R subs.
ported of course, you feel a lot more

personally i no its bigger thn wat u said but one poweracoustik p3 15 wiva a 4cu ft box wiv 2 4"x11" ports and a 1000 watt mono power acoustik BAMF amp and the boxx needs a layer of polyfill on the inside

I have a Stereo Integrity Mag D2V4, and I have flat out stumpted people running 2 10's. They can't believe the output and clean sound that a high power sealed 12'' can produce. I've run 2 10's compared and I liked the single 12'' better. But the best part is the space you don't give up with only needed 1^3ft of space. I chose the speaker that would best operate within the space and I'm pretty sure I have the best speaker out there for the limitations I had (depth & space & power).

I listen to a lot of music and a 12'' does really good job at almost every type of music out there.

Ok, so Clems probably gonna wanna say something about this post, but a JL 12W7 in a JL power wedge don't take up much space and it sounds great. I've got one in my Accord but I had it in the 4Runner for a little while and it will do whatever you want it to- slam or rock out.

There stuff is good, it's just that I think a lot of times you can get probably the same performance for cheaper.

If you have the money though go for a W7. They are nice.

I have 2 10" Kenwoods in a smaller sealed box in the rear cargo area, rear facing. I didn't install the system, it was there when I bought the vehicle. From what I can determine looking at the amps, the box has "350" watts being pushed through it. I use quotes because this is a Kenwood 350 watt amp in name only. I have a DJ set up using a pair of 600 watt amps through JBL JRX-225's, and it goes way more than twice as loud as the car amp. That should not be the case.

That being said, the twin 10's thump hard and solid, with little to no rumble or slop. That's what I prefer, so I'm changing nothing.
