125k, and the check engine light is on

truck turned 125k this past week. 98, 3rz. the check engine light came on today at start up. checked gas cap, and still on. i have done practically nothing to the thing, so i have no problem fixing it right. i am thinking the next logical step is the o2 sensors. you guys think i am on the right track, or just drop the coin and have the code read? best place the dealer for that?

not sure thats the best place, but its a place!

you can also go to an autozone and get it read.

do that first before trying to diagnose.. it could be your MAF... who knows??

went to autozone. what a bunch of hacks! didn't know where the diagnostics port was, wouldn't pop the cover off, and said.."well, atleast you keep it clean." no shi*t, no just read the code! anyhow, the light went off on my way there, and they said they could not get a reading if the light isn't on. they asked if i had checked the gas cap. i told them that was the first thing i did. anyhow, light is out, no reason why it was on in the first place. i guess only time will tell. i thought the code was stored in the ecu, but they said no. bummer, but good that the light is out too.
 
uh the code should be stored in the ecu. id go to a dealer and ask for the code to be read.. dont let them keep your truck or do any work. come back here and post the code...
 
now that is some good news. i had thought it was stored, and autozone said no. but then again, it took me telling them where the diag port was. i will hit up the dealer this weekend. the light is still out, odd. but thanks for the confirmation, lee.
 
sure. codes arent cleared until the battery is disconnected for like a minute or something.

hopefully the AZ people didnt do that or something without you seeing.
 
Ok, dumb question. Where the hell is the Diag-Port? It's easy to find on both my truck and my camaro...but I'm not seeing it so easily on the 4Runner. Is it so obvious that I'm just over looking it?

My check engine light came on last week (thought it might be gas cap related, however after 2 tanks of gas, it's still on), and I'd like to get it scanned.
 
well, on the 3rz, it is in the engine compartment, directly behind the belts, on the top/front of the motor. it will be sticking up about and inch or two from everything else, and will have a black cap on it that says diagnosis
 
Doh...no wonder. I was crawling all up under the dash/steering column/glove box. So it's actually under the hood, huh? Interesting. I'll check it out when I get home today.
 
yes it is. be sure to have the right plug for the port though. the autozone i went to, their code reading device did not have the proper plug. so, even if the light was still on, they would not have been able to help me.
 
no i haven't. i wanted to do it this weekend, but i ended up getting talked into helping put up a fence. what should have been a few hours turned into 80ft of stockade fence, and about 11 hours! needless to say, i didn't get to the dealership. hopefully this weekend. but none the less, the light is out. i am thinking that it takes a few ignition cycles (completely off, and back on) to clear a code. and seeing how it went off on the 3rd start after i reseated the gas cap, i am going with it was that. no light since. but i am still going to have it read just to be sure it isn't an o2 on the way out. i did get to put another nice coat of polish on it (second weekend in a row) on sunday. she is looking hott! especially with the new alloys, and the silver t4r.org sticker on the back window to match. oh yeah...and no more winter mats! nice factory carpets now! :D
 
yea, im back to my runner carpet mats too!

i need to do a serious detail job this coming weekend...
 
yeah, i am enjoying the nice carpets. and the detailing is nice, especially considering how quick the bugs came out this year. i am getting plasterred by them with the ride to nh! but they come off nice and easy now :)
 
I had the CEL come on hours after buying my 99. I went to AZ and the plug was under the dash by the console on the drivers side. Earlier in the post it was said it was under the hood.

Are the 98 and 99's different in this respect or did i get a p0171 from the wrong port?

My '99 Taco had the check engine light come on at 180k miles. Had it checked at the stealer and they told me the Cat converter was toast (and quoted me $800)

I got it fixed at a muffler shp for $200.

p0171 is your MAF.
