13th Gen Raptor vs. 5th Gen TRD Pro

Fruck Apples and Oranges....... when Lawndart gets his raptor I bet we will see a lot of t4r.org dudes start a new forum :)

Peace out, like I said 2 years ago, I am is waiting on the new 4Runner and see if there's a new motor there. Then a choice will have to be made !

I wouldn't go holding your breath...

The 4Runner is not getting a new motor... Toyota is one of the most conservative car companies I have ever owned a product from.

If you want a V8, buy a 4th Gen, or get a Lexus... and even fully modded with long travel, it will never be as capable in the open deserts as a Raptor would be.

And this is coming from a 4th Gen & 5th Gen owner who loves his truck and has fought with the Long Travel bug for the past 2 years. I haven't done it yet, because I feel I am trying to make it into something it is never going to be. It stays my capable and trusty trail rig, but leaves much to be desired in the open deserts of CA.

Fact of the matter is there is a significant cost difference., most people who can afford a 4Runner, probably can't afford a Raptor. I sure won't be buying a base model, so you are pretty much looking at something that cost 25k more than a optioned out Limited 5th Gen.

Ford Raptor has started becoming a very real possibility for me... not only will I save 10-15k over the cost of a Land Cruiser, it's much more well suited to how I would actually use it, out of the box.

There is also no need to start a new forum, because there is already 2 well established Raptor sites.

I love the look of the Raptor, but it's yuuuuuge and way too pricey.

It would be great if Ford did a "Raptor" package on the Ranger at some point.

Better yet, why doesn't Toyota take a few notes from Ford and make an actual offroad package for the Tacoma and 4Runner (sorry, the pro does not even come close).

IMO Raptor isn't that pricey when you start to total up what you get... factory installed long travel with 3" shocks... and a 4WD system that is pretty dang sophisticated, rear locker with a torsen front diff, plus a 10 speed with some power behind it with a tech package that rivals most luxury cars in the same price range... trail cameras, heated and cooled front and rear seats, paddle shiftiers... bla bla bla.

As for the Tacoma/Ranger... Colorado ZR2
2018 Colorado ZR2: Off-Road Truck | Chevrolet
That's my top pick for a compact truck right now... fancy shocks, front and rear lockers, option for a 2.8L Duramax Turbo-Diesel with an exhaust break. Nice little mini tow monster than can actually off-road...

Compare that to a fully loaded Limited Tacoma, and you still have a basic interior, manual seats, no memory... and driver ergonomics that haven't changed for years. Still feels like its setup for a 130 lb Asian man. I wanted to like that truck a lot more than I actually did...

I agree that Pro doesn't come close, sadly its just an appearance package with non adjustable 6112 shocks most Pro owners end up taking off to upgrade anyways. Considering the premium they charge, I can mod a trail and get more for less.

Well, that got lively ...

Should have known better but I didn't mean to state or suggest that the Raptor and the TRD Pro were apples to apples, and I really had no intentions on pulling the RTT, armor-clad, jerry can carrying parking lot crowd into the mix.

TLDR - I just wanted a car I would fit my wife, dog and myself comfortably and I could throw bags of chicken shit and mulch in the back w/o a second thought.

--

When I meant by comparing the Raptor to the TRD Pro I meant that I needed to replace my primary vehicle with something 'practical or utilitarian'. My only real criteria was that I loved it, it made some sensible mpg (this is debatable), I can carry one other + my dog comfortably, it not be too pretentious, and I wouldn't think twice throwing chicken manure and mulch in the back of it.

I actually had zero intentions of purchasing a T4R and had all the intentions of picking up a X5m, but it just so happened my wife's BMW lease came up and we got her into a new X3 (3.5 m-sport for those curious, no jerry cans or armor), and having another BMW in the garage I did not want a 3 BMW garage.

I had all sorts of odds and ends on the matrix, the Raptor and TRD Pro was just two of the more practical choices. The new m550i was on there (those salesmen sure know how to nudge me in wrong directions, and I realize this would have resulted in a 3 BMW garage as well), 991 Carrera S, CLS550 (this was in the running too, but a facelift was due soon and it came out a week ago - I think it's horrid), Subaru Outback, Prius, Tacoma Crew Cab, Normal F150, ... you get the idea.

Anyways...carry on.

Yup. The Raptor offers huge bang for buck if those additions are of value to the owner. Even if were to build their own suspension and mechanical setups the widebody is in a league of its own. Also love how the new LED headlamps look.

The same thought process went into justifying the premium for TRD Pro package on the T4R.

Will be interested to see if the Bronco ends up being offered in a Raptor package.

Ford would be crazy not to do a Raptor Bronco.

SVT always puts out impressive vehicles. I drooled over the 1st Lightning when I was a kid.

Whether they're necessary is another issue.

Me too. I've come pretty close to buying a couple of those 1st gen Lightnings. Had a buddy that had one that was converted to 4x4 and that was going to be my plan as well.

They're not really that comparable IMO. The only thing they have in common is they both have four wheel drive.

That Raptor's another level of vehicle.

The only "Raptors" in the US market will be the F150. Ford knows they can print money with them and thus there is no plans for a Raptor Ranger or Raptor Bronco.

Edit: And yes I know there's a Raptor Ranger, but that's an AU exclusive and will remain that way for a LONG time.

The 4runner Trail and F150 Raptor have a lot in common. Thay are both difficult to buy and easy to love!

I have had the Trail since 2011 and still have some work to do to finish some lighting and wiring, (the work doesn’t get done extremely fast when i do it all myself). I drove 4-5 hours to buy it new. Overall this has been a great vehicle, but i spent a lot of money on suspension, armor etc. to get it where it is and do not want to see it go so my wife is driving it now.

I Purchased the Raptor about 4 months ago. Flew to another metro, took an uber, purchased then drove it home about 700 miles, flooring most of the time. This is the Roush Raptor with supercharged 6.2L making an advertised 590 hp 590 torque. The Roush exhaust sounded amazing going through a tunnel WOT but droned terribly while cruising. I have replaced with a Corsa system which is quite when i want it to be but still sounds great. This truck has amazing power and has its own strengths.

You can see the size difference in these photos.

Trail can do trail stuff and truck can do truck stuff, but overall i think we have two of the most capable vehicles available.

And BTY my fire extinguisher is bolted down, :p:p dick... lol

First to the OP, nice 4runner and I looked at both before I bought my pro. I decided I didn't want a Raptor because it was too big as well although I do have the room for it. I felt driving it in town with how wide it is would just start to get old, parking, etc.. In addition, getting up some tight trails to fish, the width of the Raptor would be a liability. I do drive a lot of desert dirt roads and the Raptor would definitely be better for that than the pro. And now to get flamed by the pro haters. I also looked at the trail premium and decided on the pro. ALERT, not everybody pays over msrp/ premium on the pro. The difference in price was right at 3grand and when looking at the trail p and I started adding up the cost of new rims and tires (I don't like the trail rims), pro front end (looks much better imo and if I am spending this much money, I am not pd'ing my front end to make it look like a faux pro), and better springs and shocks (yes I realize I can get even better shocks). Then you add in better resale value, at least for the time being which is money on the back end, and the pro was a no brainer. You can also add in for me at least, the time to do or get everything done as well. I work 6 days a week, 10+ hours a day. My time off is worth more than gold to me. NO the 4runner is not the end all to be all vehicle. The 4runner to me is middle ground. No it won't bomb across the desert like a Raptor and no it won't be as good as a jeep in tight places and hardcore terrain but it is better than a Raptor in tight places and much better than a jeep on the road and not as dicey in the desert. If a Ranger/ Bronco Raptor were to come to the US, and I think it will because Ford is not going to let the ZR-2 sit in it's class by itself ruling over the Tacoma pro, I would definitely be looking hard at them. Who isn't looking for something better? After owning 3 Chevy's, the ZR-2 is not an option for me although, at least on paper, there isn't another vehicle on the market that's more appealing to me than the diesel ZR-2. Something was always breaking on my Chevy's and the new Colorado's just made the list as costing the most in it's class for yearly repairs! Talking to friends who drive Colorado's for their work trucks, they echo this. Some things never change.

Lol, I love those who solved the problem; they just got one of each.

I like the Raptor, but the 4r is way, way more fitting to my needs and fullfills my wants just fine. I could not imagine having a Raptor around Miami, and trying to park it in my condo garage. But I do like it, if I was rich, it might be on my top ten list of cars to get.
