14.6 MPG - 2014 SR5 - After lift and tires....

Ok, don't mean to start another debate about this but all threads that I've read and searched for were of people sharing their MPG's and anecdotal stories...... and that included pissing matches :whip2:

I am kind of baffled that Toyota and other shops think this is normal...... I've seen other runners with the same lift/tire combo's not being this bad and still getting at least 17 MPG or the very worse 16.5 or so .... but 14.6?

I got full OME 3" lift and nitto's 285/70/17's, just then it changed to 14.7/14.8 ...... after that I added the GoBI and 4x4 labs sliders and didn't move much after that

What gives?....... I would consider myself a regular driver, not super "led footed" or grandma for that matter.

Looking for real ideas and not flame wars please.

Im in Atlanta, bought it in March, was getting 18 to 19 before. mostly city but hit trails in the GA mountains once or twice a month.

Also, the question about the speedo came to mind and i checked against my Phone's GPS apps (Navigon/TomTom) and is very accurate, stealership (and 4wheel parts) says that if that is correct then there is no need to change anything (even though they don't offer the service to update that anyways).

Help..... if this is it then so be it, didn't buy this for the fuel economy but........ something IMO is wrong here.

Thanks guys, great group of folks here, learned a lot throughout the years so I owe all of you :thumb:

And since :worthless

I don't have a 4R TEP [yet], but some thoughts I have are:
1) Change where you fuel up; could be that you are getting crappy fuel
2) Go to WalMart or some auto store and buy a bottle of Techron PRO-GARD fuel injector cleaner.

My gasoline powered vehicles have always seen an improvement in MPG's after using a bottle of the Techron PRO-GARD.

Some gas stations just get crappy fuel (too much water in the fuel) or allow water to infiltrate their tanks during tanker refills.

I'm sure others have some suggestions too. Good luck!

(working a deal for a 2014 4R TEP, hopefully have it in 3 weeks!)

Think about it.

1) you've gone from a 31inch tire to a 33 tire, larger diameter, more weight
2) you've added more weight with skids
3) you've added more wind resistance with a roof rack

What were you expecting?

Also, how are you calculating your mpgs now? You're trucks mpg calculation will be wrong given the larger tires.

Thanks Pete, I have my first 5k service coming up so not sure if I should add the techron now or just way until the service........

Thanks for the feedback man, I lost that just with the lift/tires and before the rest of the upgrades, so skids/gobi had marginal effect on fuel. To go from 18/19 average to 14.6 on just tires seems a bit excessive but Im here to hear from all you guys so if it turns out to be expected like I said so be it.

it take more effort to turn weight than carry weight.... Additionally if you are using your dash MPG computer you are wrong. I would venture to say you might have lost 2mpg (to be expected)

fun science project: Ask your significant other to sit on top of the 4R.... no change. Tell her/him to bear hug a tire and then drive down the road.... change for sure lol

Normal. TBH, most of us don't expect much MPG when we mod the snot out of these things. I get about the same milage you have with all my armor and regear and 34s. Biggest hit was lifting for sure. Changed everything. Also, there are times when I am driving city mostly and I can drop all the way down to 12 MPG. It is the price of admission. You have a beast of a trail rig. There are reasons Toyota didn't sell them with the 33s and lifted... CARB...

So you're changing your tire diameter by 3.5% by moving to bigger tires. So you should calculate mpg accordingly. Miles via trip computer per tank multiplied by 1.035. Then divide that by gallons consumed according to the gas pump.

That will be your most accurate mpg.

Bigger tires also mean more weight, therefore more power required by the engine to get the thing going. More power = more fuel = less gas mileage.

At least 90% the tires. I have roof rack, sliders and 3/2 lift and still get 18.5 to 19 on my daily driving on stock sized AT tires.

As said above use (miles / gallons at pump) * 1.035 to find real milage.

If I decide to go 33 on my rig im going to regear to get the engine load and gear ratios back to normal. The milage should then only drop a little. You're fighting a lying odometer and a stiffer gear ratio (engine rpm to wheel rpm) to get your vehicle moving.

This is exactly your issue.

Tomas, I get about 16-17 city and I only have a lift. I'd imagine that with larger tires and a roof rack I'd be getting about 14.5 etc too.

Wow, thank you guys this is good information to have, it seems there are a couple suggestions there I might try and also calculate the real world MPG.

Does a "ScanGauge" help with some of this data? I've never dabbled into that thing.

Thanks again.

With my setup (33-inch tires, lift, roof rack, etc.), I am getting between 15.0-15.4 mpg per tank with 70/30 City/Highway driving which is approx. 2 mpg drop from my pre-lift performance. So if my mix included more City driving, I could see mid- to high 14s as well. Sounds normal to me as well.

You can adjust your Scangauge to compensate for tires, just adjust it by 3.5%

OP I'm with you on the painful MPG drop.

No lift, Sliders, Front only RCI skid and wheels/tires. We are averaging 15.2!!!! per the computer.

I am however going to swap out my wheels, as others have said, the wheel/tire combo makes a big difference. I went from 18 to 16 with the tires/wheels alone.

Which wheels do you have and how much do they weigh each? Mine are 32LBS each!! I'm going to switch to a lighter Wheel when it's time to change my tires.

Check out Stealth, they make light/good wheels.

^This. It does matter. I had MB wheels for a while and then swapped to the Konig and did get a little back. Stealth should be similar as they are only a LB or two heavier than Konig.

Here is an article about MPG just going to more aggressive tread tires, this does not even take into account a taller heavier than stock tire.
Tires and Fuel Economy - Four Wheeler Magazine On my 03 when I went from a 265/65/70 highway stock tire to a BFG all terrain 265/70/17 (1 inch taller) I lost 1.5-2 mpg. You should be running more pressure in a 285 tire verses the stock tire probably around 35-36 psi. This will help a little. My friend did a lift on his 4th gen and did not notice much of a mpg lose but when he went with all terrain tires he also lost around 2 mpg.

I'm basically running the same set up as you, and I went from 21mpg stock, to about 15-16mpg. Bummer, yet the price you pay.
