14 Trail hitch rust

Just wondering if anyone has had hitch rust and what paint you have used to fix it. I was thinking of using black Plasti Dip.

Got a lot of rust on hitch for the past 4,5 years but didn't do anything about it. In worst case scenario if my hitch became unsafe in another 5 years I guess I'll just replace it.

I would get rust converter and brush/spray it on the metal. It will turn the rust black. Then use a good enamel paint. Plasti dip is not practical

Plastidip is not paint, and comparatively super expensive. Heaven forbid you ever slide a hitch into your receiver, you'll be missing paint all over the place

POR 15 is what I used on mine. Rust wasn't bad but I already had it out so I touched it up.

Plastidip: I agree with not using plastidip (IMO on anything), but especially on this.

Rust Converter: I tried Ospho first and it was largely ineffective.

Paint: So then I used RustBullet Automotive 2 coats grey, the 2 coats gloss black, after sanding and de-greasing the area first.

1. For anything other than on the hitch, it is messy.
2. It was expensive (comparatively).
3. It takes more time to brush on (comparatively).
4. Unless you have a second vehicle for towing it's not going to be a problem you'll ever be able to fix.

I see it as more of a yearly maintenance thing.

If I was not planning on using Rust Bullet on my frame I would sand, degrease, prime and paint with some rust inhibiting Krylon and be done in a weekend.

Or you could you know, wipe the dust off with wet paper towel and throw 2 quick coats of spray paint on it and not act like its rocket surgery to paint a wear item.

Pull that baby off and have it powder coated.

They will bead blast it, get the powder in all the crevices and you won't have any more issues. Plus, the cost for a part that small will be quite reasonable.

Do I love powder coating? Yes, yes I do.

Just get one of those plastic Toyota butt plugs so you can't see the rust and it won't bother you. Out of site, out of mind.

Or get a shackle. Looks cool. But some SOB might steal it.

Yes, I bought the same one. Lasted one day. When I get a nicer one I'm getting a lock. At least then they will have to put some effort into cutting the lock off.

I also bought the same one and same thing, noticed it was gone/stolen within a couple days!

Hitch receivers are supposed to rust.

Receiver inserts are for pansies.

Mine looked bad after two years. When the rear bumper was off I also removed the hitch (six bolts), wire brushed the rusty areas and applied few coats of engine enamel ($5-ish at Home Depot). Now its nice and shiny!

Is rust pretty much guaranteed to happen on the receiver? Any preventative maintenance that can be done?

Just finished treating the rust on my hitch receiver last weekend - a quick wire brushing, then a coat of Beauti-Tone Rust Coat (from Home Hardware up here in Canada). Now its nice and shiny for the summer.
