15.9 MPG on 06 SE V6

I got 06 SE V6 4WD last week with 60,000 miles and computer shows am getting 15.9 MPG. It is still stock and has stock size BFG long trail tires. I think mpg is too less, what you guys think?
I used to have 05 V6 2WD and I was averaging 18.5 mpg. I know I can cannot expect the same from 4WD, but I think it can (should) improve.

What you guys recommend?

I've got a 07 SE 4x4 and the display reads 18.5 but i'm typically getting 17mpg calculated. Make sure the sparks plugs were changed at the 60k interval and you could always seafoam it to clean the motor out.

I agree, it should be better MPG. I just did some work and got over 20.0, first time ever over 17.3 throttle body, clean MAF sensor, air filter hmmm anyone else add in some more work for this guy? Oh yeah, unplug neg batttery cable to reset system when/while you do any changes to you 4runner. It will reset itself and thats how I noticed my mpgs change- for the better!

I may go that route. I guess will seafoam it first and then will change the plugs. Not sure I can have it verify if they did change plugs at 60k

I just had the 60K service done at my Toyota dealership. They changed out the spark plugs and all oils/fluids. I have the same thing - my computer went from 18.5 to 16.5. I think the on-board computer is wrong. I'm going to do some manual calculations.

Some other observations (not factual) that I've noticed is that; it idles slightly higher, and has less throttle response (it's like all the new oils are thicker and slowed everything down...maybe that's what is causing the reduced MPG?). Most of all, they said they could not do the alignment because "my tires do not have a lip and now the wheel shimmies after their tire rotation - guess they are out of balance after two months...WTF?

ive got an 07 sport with about 54kmiles and im getting about 21 mpg with mostly city driving. its all stock and i keep my michelin tires at 35 psi. im about to put on magnaflow exhaust and an afe air intake on. good luck

My computer always 18.5 when I do manual calculation I get 16mpg on a mixed loop .

I have an '08 4-Runner, I check each tank fill up and run about 20 - 22 mpg. The computer shows 1.5 to 2 mpg optimistic. Last tank was 22+ calculated with computer showing 24+. At steady 75 - 80 mph on the freeway, actual mileage drops to about 19+.
I live at 6000+ feet altitude so I don't make sea level horsepower.

You think that is bad? I average 11-12mpg on my V6! :ybrick:

I was getting ~15.5 when i was doing all city driving. Ive been getting ~18.5 now with mixed driving. When i moved from South Carolina to Colo Springs (~1500 miles) i got avg. 23 mpg loaded inside and pulling my trailer and quad. That just barely offset the uhaul getting 6mpg.

Check the air filter, clean the MAF, seafoam it and reset the computer and see where you end up. I would say anything over 17mpg hand calculated is normal for mixed driving conditions. Good Luck and keep us updated

I have a 2003 Limited with a V8. My normal driving is around town in the suburbs. I only average 6,000 miles per year and my typical mpg is about 16. When I take a road trip, highway mileage is about 20-21. I think this is fine for a full time 4WD V8 with a 3" lift in a 4,500 lb. truck.

@Rockwall, I have seen folks with V8 doing more than 16 but with a lift ( not sure about the tires) if might be ok. I will do the MAF cleaner, air filter and seafoam on the weekend to see how it helps 15.9mpg.

Did seafoam my 4R today. Only did vaccum line and gas tank. Also went ahead and cleaned out the MAF as well. It shows I gained about 3.5 mpg with this treatment. I have not hand calculated it yet, but usually compauter is about 1 to 1.5mph too optomistic. Even then its an increase of 2 to 2.5mpg.:thumb3:
