do you guys happen to know if the sport edition 4runner would fit 16.5" wheels?

16.5" as in Hummer H1 37's? I think you might be in uncharted territory since most here don't run large enough lifts to run those combos. I believe Goodyear make a 33", 35", 37" and I think a 40" tire for 16.5" wheels, but it is a small tire market. You might have to find the wheel you thinking and physically test it for caliper clearance as I doubt you will find many folks here that have tried that combo. Which wheels were you thinking?

I've never even heard of 16.5" wheels. 
My very first vehicle (1957 International Travelall) had 17.5" wheels but I've never heard of 16.5.

I assume you are looking at wheel diameter of the 16.5 vs the stock 17, it should work. It obviously depends on the wheel design and offset would determine if will actually clear the calipers.
16.5 were more common 20 years ago. They are pretty rare now and have some fundamental design differences that are better suited for off road use when it comes to being able to break and reseat a bead. What really killed the 16.5 market was people mistakenly mounting 16s on 16.5 wheels. Your tire selection in a 16.5 will be very limited.

So it looks like you're going with 37's. 16.5 should fit, have you found any with a 6x5.5 pattern? Only 16.5 rims I've seen are 8 lug

Yes I remember seeing safety videos in school on that, man those things did some major damage to people and equipment!

I always saw the warnings on sidewalls of 16" and 16.5" tires and wondered why that was necessary, I never realized there were that many people making that mistake.
There are some pretty gruesome pictures and videos out there of people making the mistake. I only saw it one time that a tech mounted a 16.5 on a 16 because someone pulled the wrong tire. Luckily the bead just blew off on the wheel which was properly secured to the machine, and the tech wasn't leaning on the tire. Most people have no respect for the amount of stored energy in an inflated tire.
