16" Calipers with 17" Wheels ??

Went to replace a frozen brake caliper on my 2003 4Runner. The truck has 17 in. wheels so I naturally ordered a 17 in. caliper. Went to install the caliper only to find the pads only partially cover the rotor. Strange. Then I set both calipers on the bench. The new one clearly says 17 in. the old one says 16 in. I bought the truck used but the wheels are OEM. Has anyone else ran into this situation?

I have to commend Auto Zone for their customer service. I took the 17 inch caliper back the store Sunday morning. They called their "hub" and had a 16 inch caliper delivered to the store by 5:00 that night! Cant beat that!!

I think it's all about "what are the standard wheels for the package?" What I mean is on yours the 17's were optional w/ the 16's as the "normal" wheel. On the Limited's and the Sport Editions the 17" is the "normal" wheel due to the larger brakes.

Guess I spoke to soon. Went to install the caliper today and it is for the Passenger side. S$#T! So off to Autozone I go to order the caliper AGAIN. I kept the one I had and installed it on the passenger side anyway. That went fine. I think I can now change the brakes on a 4Runner with my eyes closed!

You are usually right on the money, but even up to the 09 models (see J.A.s site link below for specs) the larger (13.3") rotors are only (except the odd ball off the line) on the Sport Editions since 03. The SR5 & Limiteds have 12.6" front rotors no matter what size rims 16" 17" 18". Edit: I reread your post and had a brain fart, I see you meant the normal rim size, not brake rotor.

I have always wondered if you just bought the 13.3" rotors and calipers if you could just bolt them right in??? Anyone Tested this. It would be a realatively easy upgrade if it is possible.

Ah, very cool. Some Limited's have XREAS I believe, do they get the bigger brakes? I always thought that Limited's may or may not have XREAS. My understanding is that big brakes and XREAS go together regardless of SE or Limited. Hmmm... Perhaps some more reading tonight.


Yes to the upgrade. A few people here and at T120 have put on the 13.3's. This is a good read on the topic.

The saga continues... Just in case you go to Auto Zone to buy calipers, the part numbers are backwards. The part number for the Drivers side is actually the Passenger side. Learned the hard way!

For what its worth the larger rotor did bolt up. I thought about buying the lager rotor to go with it, but then I would have to upgrade the passenger side also. Not worth it to me..
