XREAS stands for "Cross Linked Relative Absorber System".
X-REAS was designed to help improve vehicle on-road handling performance. This technology links each of the vehicle's shocks to it's diagonal counterpart via a gas hydraulic chamber. During cornering or when traveling over bumpy surfaces, the gas hydrauilc chamber acts like a bank "borrowing" fluid from the cross-linked shock bearing the least amount of force and "loaning" it to the shock sustaining the greatest amount of force. This exchange of fluid helps the 4Runners wheels maintain contact with the driving surface and helps lessen vehicle body sway, pitch and roll, making for a more comfortable ride.

Yes, the X-REAS shocks will need to be removed (disabled) if you are doing a coil over upgrade/swap.
Possibly, though not too many buy the X-REAS system to add on their non X-REAS 4Runner. Dealer replacement for X-REAS is over $1500, but I suspect most would not pay more than a couple hundred for it.

Replaced my X-REAS w Bilstien 5100s and have never been happier. Much better cornering stability and the nose does not dive as it used to w X-REAS. The system makes no sense to this engineer.

My X-REAS had 115k on it, had no nose dive, and it handled turns better than my new Icon 2.5" Resi. CDC w/700lb coils. Yours was probably shot.
My XREAS has 125K on it. It's not leaking, and corners well. My complaint is the suspension is too soft - it tends to wallow on dips and wavy roads. No bottoming out or front end diving - just not tight and solid like I want an SUV to be. Rides too much like my father's Oldsmobile. From what I've read on here, I expect the Bilsteins to be more to my liking. (My '94 with OEM shocks and springs has a much tighter and crisper feel.)
I would be interested in it, if it is in good shape. Shipping might be a problem though. Maybe I could just get the shocks??
I'm showing each xreas shock is only $261.01 list price for your car :keyboard: I don't know where your getting $1,600 each.
I have 125k on my 04 Limited and one started to leak. I removed the XREAS and installed Bilstein 5100s with stock springs.

How is this setup working out for you? I am buying an 08 with XREAS and I do have a set of 5100s that never made it onto my last 4th Gen. I know eventually I will need to convert.

When the system is new and working as it should, it’s quite nice. We bought a Limited 5th gen and its very noticeable when compared to something that has 100k+ miles on it.
Just like any other old suspension, it becomes old and fatigued and doesn’t really work as well as it should. That said, if replacing suspension, 5100 made for a nice refresh package, I would not spend the money to do XREAS on an old truck, you get more value going with a traditional setup.
