16 inch rim with 231?

Greetings again..

Searched out the forum for rim ideas for upgrading my 1998 sr5 4x4 to the 231 calipers...

Most suggest 17 inch rims wether it be toyota or not.. I d like to keep as much rubber as possible and go 16's?

Any body know what specs i need to know to search out a set of 16's that will have the right offset / backspace ......? I'm trying to keep the rim price down and run the 32 inch tires... ibelive its 265/75/16?

231s and I still managed to warp them (stupid cheap rear brakes come unadjusted faster than paris hilton can take her clothes off)

I was trying to find out the difference in spacing between mine and the stock 4Runner wheels because I wanted to get a small spacer (they look a tad sunken in the with the new black flares), but I couldn't find it.

I believe they are 4.5"...

I have those 6 spoke 1998 4runner rims 16 inch.. I believe searching through the forums that I can go 199 no problem but I'm interested in the 231's...

Nobody on the forums knows the right ofset/backspace needed to clear 231's for 16 inch rims?

lol, why would we need to know that? you go after market you do the trial and error, lol j/k
but i think it's funny there's like 10 rims listed above that are known to work and you complain about us not knowing the back spacing required, maybe you can contribute now! go out find the back spacing of each of those rims above and report back what the smallest back spacing # is between those rims and we'll have an answer !! lol

Yes, A 5mm spacer should work instead of grinding

lol yeah that's basically what i was telling him to do so we would then know what the needed back spacing is for running the 231's, it's just alot of work and searching around to get to that point though...i was just being a jerk and giving him a hard time for going after market, i like most of the stock rims over what's out there for after market, lol...that's all just being a butt hole....

if you like the 6 spoke wheels, you can sand them down and paint them... I did mine, they were horrendous from the chemicals they put on the road here in colorado... or if you want, it will help you sell them for a ton more money...

The problem is that backspacing alone isn't the only variable. Just because one wheel with a certain backspacing works with 231s does not mean that a different wheel with the same backspacing will work also. Case in point.. the stock 5 stars work, but the split 3-spokes will not - even though they have the same 4.65" backspacing.

The issue isn't backspacing, it's how close the inside face of the wheel is to the hubs. The stock 5 stars' inside face is farther away from the area (aka flange) that bolts to the hub than the split 3-spokes. I have come to the conclusion that you can run just about any 16" wheel that has 4-4.65" BS with the 231s, but some may require wheel spacers to do it without hitting that inside face.

Not exactly sure about that particular set, but I was under the impression that they were similar to the ones I have.

Someone with Tundra brakes (I'll do it if there's other wheels to try, test subjects??) should test fit the different rims that are questionable, such as the FJ rims.

You must calculate the clearance using not only the backspacing, but the offset as well. When I did the calculation, I came up with an ideal number of 4.75" backspacing with a 12mm offset. This allows me some extra room in there to clear mud. That said, if the FJ rims have less than, say, about a 6mm offset, I doubt the Tundra calipers will fit. Its not the size of the caliper... its just the way they mount, they stick out pretty far.

I imagine they would be a tight squeeze, but will probably fit. They look like they have a fair amount of offset.

I actually did a lot of wheel refinishing in my drive way for my Comanche and a 3rd gen f body...( did you know they actually used wood screws to hold the majority of the interior together..lol)

I was hoping to avoid it .. but at this point I might be looking for stock rims I know will fit.

If any body finds some aftermarkets that do fit... let me know
