16 Tacoma better than 4runner..

Hi all,

I was very interested in anew 4runner... So doing some research and wanted to drive one... While at the dealership... I noticed a taco TRD sport.. Really nice... I need more of a suv and not a pickup but damm

The taco had a better engine now and a 6 speed tranny.... Why don't the 4runner at least get the 6spd..?

I have to admit also... I drove both,, and the taco TRD sport drove night n day better than the 4runner...which leaves me really bummed out..

Interior is much nicer in 4runner.. But that's it... Ehh

i test drove a 2016 TRD Sport, then a Trail 4Runner...i felt the opposite. would've been my 5th Tacoma (well, I would've picked up a TRD Off Road)...instead, it became my first 4Runner.

Go for the Tacoma then, but I doubt you will be happy in the end. Look at a trail w/KDSS if you want better handling or a Limited w/Xreas

Yea I hear KDSS is really nice.. But impossible to find around here to test drive... Limited... Ehh not my liking

I kinda agree with you there... The engine n tranny has been bullet proof... But times need to change... I'd think lol.. At least to a 6speed

Needing a truck and needing an SUV are two pretty different things.

I also like the Tacoma because of the new tech and hardware, but need cargo space more than I need a bed.

Haven't driven the new Taco but on paper I would say its a small step change vs. anything drastic. Also you are comparing a gernational gap in platforms, the new Taco came out in 2016, the current 4runner in 2010. Certainly buy which you prefer , if you want to wait it out till the new 4runner is released I image they will share a similar powertrain (pure speculation on my part)

I waited 14 plus months for the new Tacoma to come out, because I was dead-locked certain that I wanted the new Tacoma in DC TRDOR format with the premium and tech package. I finally drove one and decided that the T4R was the better way to go. The backseat on the DC is far too small for my application, and the headroom was pretty scant. Still lacking a height adjustable seat was disappointing as well. I do love the looks of the new Tacoma, the dash layout, the LED running lights, etc. But the SUV fits my needs a little better. Wife also preferred the SUV.

And finally, the price jump in the Tacoma made me realize I could get a T4R and even a Pro for just a tad more. The Tacoma I was considering was right around $40,000 and the T4R Pro at about $41,300. The decision was then real simple for me.

Love the new Tacoma also that's why we're going to trade in the wife's Camry and get one��. Best of both worlds.

You can't compare a 2016 Taco to a 4Runner. Especially with the new revised Taco. It would be a better comparison when the new 4Runner comes out.

Same here. I went in planning on a new Tacoma TRDOR Crew Cab for my next camp/overland/biking/skiing vehicle. I travel all over the west so needed something comfortable for long hauls with 3-4 adults. After driving the Taco and then a T4R Trail back to back the choice to go with the T4R was easy. The new Taco is much nicer than the previous Gen but the back seat was way too cramped for a full size adult to sit in comfortably. Also, even though they have stepped up the Taco interior, the T4R is still nicer. Overall ride in the T4R was much better as well. I don't have to have a bed as I have a small utility trailer and like the functionality of the cargo area in the T4R versus throwing on a shell and configuring a Taco bed.

The Taco is great and if you need a bed it's a solid choice but I definitely don't think its better overall than the T4R.

The 16 Taco is a very nice mid size truck. But as others have mentioned it is really a completely different vehicle than the TR4.
It has a updated drivetrain which it should. Obviously at this point the T4R has a out of date drivetrain, but still a very reliable outdated drivetrain.

Its only outdated as far as the EPA is concerned. I love the current engine in the 4runnner. Jeep updated their engine from the I6 in 2007 and again in 2012. The old motor is still the better one. I feel the same is happening here.

All very good feed back.. I'm really torn cause I do need the space of an suv...really wish the 4R was also more updated... And also I didn't drive a Bilstien equipped 4R..which always makes a huge difference in my book.. I LOVE Bilstiens
