161,000 miles- Maintenance??

I have just crossed 161,000 in my 1997 SR5 4Runner. I am the third owner, and have never owned a Toyota before. I know they are supposed to last forever, but what can I do to make sure that nothing bad happens. I'm in college and can't afford to have to buy a new vehicle anytime soon. I change my oil regularly, and the only problems I've notice in the past 20,000 miles are a squeaky front right wheel- I need to find out what that is... and I have had problems a few times starting the truck. The only times I've experienced that problem was either after it had rained, or after I had washed the truck- so any suggestions with that? It just clicks, and doesn't turn over when I turn the key. It sounds like an actual starter problem with the coils or something.

I was also looking at getting a new air filter or an entirely new intake system. I have heard that True Flow is a good choice since they last a long time. Does anyone know the differences between the filter and the entire intake system?

Thanks a lot for any help you can give. Does Toyota offer a reconditioning service or something that I could just let them look at every part of the truck?

From what I've read the truflows are the best filter for the 3rd gen. People recommend it over the K&N. If you wan to do an intake just do the deckplate mod with a tru flow and you should be happy. I'm actually in search of a deckpate to do this mod myself.

Yeh, but I want to find out the differences between the intake system and the filter itself. Also any preventative maintenance I should be doing on the truck.

When was the last ime your fliuds were changed? That would be a good place to start. Also regular tune up stuff like plugs wires filters etc. etc.



As for the filter and intake differences there is atleast one member that's tried everything available for our car. The general consensus is the deckplate mod and a good filter (tru flow, k&n etc.) most ppl like the tru flow best. Here are a few threads to check through.
