16x7 or 16x8 Rims?

I did some searching but didn't see much difference in the two besides backspacing. I am running 265/75 on the stock 16 5 Spoke (16x7) with no troubles. Is the only advantage of the 16x8 being able to run a wider tire in which case spacers etc. without rubbing?

I assume the the max size for the stock 16x7 is the 265. I don't plan on running anything wider than that.

If I missed a thread that addressed this point me in the right direction. Don't mind self educating as much as possible.

I think another advantage is looks. A 16x8 wheel with a 4" backspacing will push the tire out just to the lip of the fender flare, filling it up. Looks a ton better in my opinion.
 
I've ran 12.5" wide tires without problems on 7" wheels. Lots of people on here run 285s (11" wide) on stock 16x7s too. Some shops won't mount up anything wider than 10" on a 7" rim, but that's because of legalities, not function. A skinnier wheel will also help to keep the beads on when your aired-down off road.

You'd get the same look with a 7" wheel and 3" backspacing. It's not specific to the wheel width, rather it's a function of the width and backspacing.

Exactly. You have more freedom to air down when running a wider tire on a narrower wheel.

I don't believe changing from 7" to 8" wheel width and the same tire is going to affect rubbing issues. However, going wider without also changing backspacing could cause problems.

Wheel width, backspacing, and offset can be confusing. I searched on "wheel width backspacing offset" and found this decent page:

15x7 to 16x8

I am in a somewhat similar position...I have a 98 4Runner with 15x7 wheels, but I want to go bigger wheels (16x8) and run 265/70/16s. Can I do this without backspacing or mods?
 
Every wheel has back spacing, but yes it’s possible, depending on the offset of your wheels. I ran 16x8 w/ 265/75/16’s with 3.5 of backspacing, or et -25, for a few years on stock suspension. 4 inches of back spacing would pry give you more clearance.

I am currently running 16x8 with 4" BS (forgot what offset that is) and I couldn't be happier with it - if you have the flared fenders, the tires come about even with them. According to my info plate, my vehicle was produced with 15 inch wheels. Fits fine without spacers or anything, I had SLIGHT rubbing with my 285s but nothing trimming couldn't fix. I'm assuming with 265s it'll be much better. However, with that said I'm running ~3in of lift, but I don't see that being an issue if you keep the tire size around what you have planned. Iirc, thats what the stock tires were, or roughly so
If you're going bigger wheels, upgrading your brakes is highly advised. Not doing so can cause your brakes to wear way faster, and with how underpowered the 15in brakes are already I imagine you'll be blowing through rotors in no time. Most even feel the larger calipers/rotors that came with the 16in wheels are still fairly weak for our cars
Backspacing is not a mod, it is a measurement of the wheel. It is directly related to offset, and similar but not the same. The lower the backspacing, the more the wheel sticks out.

16x8 with 4 inches of back spacing is et 0. He is sticking with stock tire size, he won’t need to upgrade his brakes.

another option if your going to purchase new wheels?

I'm stepping upto the 17" wheels because more options are available IMO. I'm also going to run load range C on this truck because it spends most of it's time on the road. I don't think you really lose that much sidewall on the 17" wheels for air down. everything is a compromise and I'm trying to get the best ride on road with this setup. the OEM stock ride on these trucks is terrific but running load range E tires degrades the ride unless you have super high end coils/shocks.
