17'' Wheels on 14 Limited

Hello everybody. I have just bought my first 4Runner. It is a 2014 Black Limited.

I was planning to slowly start taking it off road. As my first mod I was planning to purchase a set of 17" Pro Comp 7036 wheels and mount the Trail/SR5 stock-sized BFG T/A tires (P265/70R17). However, the guy an my local store told me I cannot have 17" wheels on the limited because of the brake discs/calipers.

Is it true? Please tell me the guy was wrong! Did anyone change the wheels to 17" on a 2014 Limited? Is so, is it a simple swap or was there anything needed?

Ideally I'd like to have two sets of wheels and drive the 20" on the highway and change to 17" when traveling to the west.

I put 17" trail edition rims with stock size 265/70-R17 tires on my 2013 limited just this past week. I think the new wheels look MUCH better, and the tire selection is better, as well.

No problem, glad it helped! FWIW, those are stock size tires for a Trail, but E-rated Toyo AT2's. Probably overkill for what I do with my 4r.

I just called the Toyota Dealership and they said that even if the wheel fits there are sensors on the hubs that are programmed for the 20" wheels and putting 17" rims will mess with the breaking system. I was told not to put the 17"s.

I'm little confused. Do any of you have any noticeable issues with how your 4Runner breaks compared to stock rims?

Fail. Good thing the dealer is aware of the product they service/sell.

I always assumed it has to do with the overall rolling diameter. Which is the same. Even if you change it, I don't think it would do too much. I think the diameter of the wheel and the height of the sidewall is irrelevant to the car.

No issues at all for me.

I didn't realize TWO PICS prove that 17" wheels don't cause any issues with electronics/braking sensors. I guess I need to be more careful asking questions here not to be lectured. I stand corrected.

Hello, and welcome to the Forum. Please learn to use the Search tool so cranky members don't get b!tchy.

Here are your answers:
1. Smart to stay with oem tire size imo. Local store is wrong, as is your Toyota dealer.
2. Easily dozens of forum members have done so. (I would too if I owned the LE).
3. Doable, but caveat: You'll have to have TPMS sensors in BOTH sets of wheels (*) at added cost, PLUS you'll have to have your ECM reprogrammed each time you swap wheelsets to recognize the alternate TPMS's. PITA.

* The 4R ECM will only recognize 4 TPMS's at a time. You could drive one set of wheels w/o TPMS's and ignore the light (as I do on my winter tires).

The locals get a little cranky around here...even if you do use the search feature.

While I'm no engineer, I think your dealer is full of shite. My 4runner LE weighs exactly the same as it did before I put oem 17's on, and the overall diameter/circumference of the wheel is unchanged. I can't think of any logical reason for that to have any effect on braking performance. Furthermore, how could a sensor in the hub even tell? I call BS.

I will have to nitpick one small thing that philsey said, though. He commented about 2 sets of TPMS sensors and having to get the ECM reprogrammed every time you swap wheel sets. While I haven't done it, I'm pretty sure you can clone TPMS sensors and keep 2 sets with only 4 ID numbers. Added cost? Probably. PITA? Yes, but not as much as having your ECM reprogrammed all the time.

I just wanted to follow up on my own post.
First, thank you for all replies that help me make a decision.

I got a set of 5 17" Level 8 Guardian wheels: Level 8 Guardian custom wheels in the Lafayette Area - Discount Tire
and BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO LT265/70R17E1 121R: BFGoodrich tires for your 2014 TOYOTA 4 RUNNER in the Lafayette Area - Discount Tire

Without any lift the fit is good, wheels noticeably stick out more compared to stock, which looks good to me. No issues with tires rubbing metal. There was some light plastic liner rubbing inside wheel well though. I had to use the heat gun to clear some space for tires in the front, nothing major, just pushed the liner inside a little.

Discount tire refused to sell the wheels/tires without TMPS sensors, so I got them and they need to be reprogrammed. It is a pain, but nothing that can prevent me from driving. On my last trip to CO I had to ignore the warning light for 10 days.

I think you just helped me made decision on my setup. I have the lift from my 2013 4runner, but I don't know if Im ready to part with Xreas just yet. Do you have more pictures of your truck with those wheels. Truck look good.

Yea your 4runner looks good OP. Your caution with pulling the trigger on those upgrades is understood. Don't sweat it. I would have sdcond guessed it to. Not all of us as are knowledgeable as other members on here.
