170,000K "service"

Hi folks,
Here's my story... I bought a 2008 SR5 4x4 (6, not 8) two years ago which now has 170,000k. Never had any major issues to my knowledge and came with a full service history all done at the same Toyota dealer. For maintenance, really the only thing I have done to it was oil changes and a new battery, headlight bulbs, little stuff. My question is: What preventive maintenance should I be doing at this point? The official service guide stops at 120k but I'm sure there are "inside tips" that the group here know about that couldn't be found in any manual. I live in Michigan so winter temps are about 4 months out of the year.

Any tips are greatly appreciated.

i have 150k on mine and similar story. havent done anything too major i dont think in 3ish years.

i stay on top of sounds and noises (issues) that are current. if i went around looking at everything or looking to fix things before theyre broken, i bet id end up spending some unnecessary $

So you can generally extrapolate out the manual for things that should be done every 5k, 10k, 15k, 30k etc

I think each 4runner is different. Those are the major things for preventative maintenance that do you - otherwise you replace things when they become a problem

You could consider changing the differential fluids every 30-100 k
- Changing transmission fluid is a whole can of worms that people will give you all sorts of opinions on and you can do some reading
- grease up the u joints/ drive shaft every 30 k or so
- watch the brakes
- Being in michigan - id wd40, pb blaster, lubricate etc all the areas that open and close and a lot of the bolts so if you do have maintenance its easier to manage (ive had the gas door rust through on my 03)

Service that "lifetime" transmission fluid. People will probably chime in here and throw shade, but IMO at that mileage now is the time to get it done.

Grease any grease points.

Check spark plugs, PCV valve, air filter, and cabin air filter.

When I bought mine at 190k I serviced all fluids. Both diffs, tcase, oil, transmission, coolant, brake fluid and power steering. But thats just me. Some of that gives you insight into how well it's been maintained.
 
I have an 08 at like 187k.
-Tranny drain & fill is very easy to do on your own. Typically requires 3-4 times to replace all the fluid in the system.
- Front/Rear diffs & X-case fluid exchange.
-PS fluid & Coolant exchange. At least ensure you are running ATF in the PS reservoir and long lift pink for coolant. (radiators are also prone to failure..)
-Check your calipers regularly. The pistons on the front end tend to seize regardless of OEM or aftermarket.
Also check your exhaust/headers as they are also prone to issues, esp. in the upper MW.
 
I'm with Warwicke on this one. If I purchased a higher mileage vehicle, I would replace all fluids as a precautionary reset, especially if I didn't have maintenance records. It gives you piece of mind and the fluids coming out can tell you a lot about condition and how it was maintained. You also then have a reference point for replacement schedule from that point on.

Now 150,000 miles and all is good.
Was good prior to D/F.





Firebirdass You don't read. The dealer did my tranny DF at 100,000 miles and put 6 quarts on my bill.

You need to get lost as I asked you too. You are full of BS. You know nothing about my 4runner. Cheap AH

My dealer sells thousands of Toyotas and works on thousands of transmissions. You are 1 big fool that don't know JS. So please get lost.

you said it was 5 qts? :lie: (a pan drain & fill is only ~3.5qts) & dont forget to tell everyone to use T-IV fluid in their Ws trans...

Why didn’t they use WS?

The D/F was done in 2011 5 quarts of T-IV.

New T-IV is non synthetic
New WS is synthetic

dealer receipt says 6 quarts used.

All I can say is the car came new with T-IV and tranny has 150,000 miles on it and shifts fine. Dealer did D/F 45,000 miles ago.

NO, your 2005 4runner did NOT come new with T-IV trans fluid... where do you come up with this crap?? your trans uses WS fluid. period. please show us where a 2005 4runner uses T-IV fluid... read your owners manual!

nowhere does toyota say WS fluid is synthetic... got proof of that? or maybe you can just post a pic of some fish again...

fresh fluids are critical, so do that all around. spark plugs. filters.

expect cooling system replacement (radiator, hoses, thermostat).

exhaust system is aging, so be prepared.

underbody and certain body part (under doors, around weatherstripping) rust exam.

make sure that spare drops!

WS is synthetic.
The Toyota dealer takes care of my transmission. They use T-1v they told me. It is nonsynthetic.
On the dealer's invoice, they charged me for 6 quarts. Don't know where you got 3 quarts.

You two are a trip...

Dipstick = Toyota Type IV, no dipstick = Type WS

Everything I can read online confirms this, so even though you had it serviced at the dealer, I would confirm what was used and if it's not what was previously in there, that it's ok to mix.

My 2003 has a dipstick so Type IV is what I used.
 
Toyota dealer uses Type 1V in my 2005. Says they can't get WS so they use it in most all the Toyotas they service and sell.

Some owners use Valvoline Max Life and go over 200,000 miles.

I wonder how big a deal what fluid you choose, and I've never read of anyone's tranny failing on an off-brand.

Valvoline says right on its bottle Good for Toyotas.

When I went to Toyota to buy WS, they didn't have it. They sold me more Type 1V.

I let them service my 4runner at 100,000 miles and they used Type 1V.

Be careful what you read on the internet. They are not Toyota dealers giving advice, selling and servicing Toyotas
