17x8 vs 17x9 wheels

Are there any performance benefits of one width over the other?

Does wider feel more/less stable on the road?

Does either one help/hurt gas mileage?

Does one handle road cornering better than the other?

I'm more concerned with street performance than I am offroad performance.

wider is most likely going to be a heavier wheel=less mileage.

wider wheel allows to run a wider tire too

The tire size will remian consistent regardless of the wheel size I choose. Either way, I'm going with 285/70/17.

I know the bead will sit wider on a 9 inch rim than an 8 inch rim... but I'd be suprised if the tread/footprint was affect much.

Just wondering if anyone has run both sizes, which they prefer and why.
