18 mpg city - not bad! (V8)

Just got the best mpg since I've owned it.
Easy off the stops and no flooring it.
Frankly I think it's amazing mileage for the size/weight of the vehicle. Lots of Rav4's getting worse than that. And even small cars don't do much better. It's really sad that small cars get 20-22mpg city.
On the down side, hywy mileage sucks. Went to Nashville, TN last week, almost 900 miles and got 19mpg of all hywy driving. Of course it was 65-75 all the way, but I'd figured to break 20 anyway.

Yes,definelty good since even my mom's stock '99 Limited and her light pedal foot she might see close to 19 in the city.

When I drive (always pretty hard) I get about 17.5 City and 19.75 Highway (cruise set on 80 usually). I have now owned it just over 50,000 miles. I have been trying to limit my consumption to 1 tank a week. If I am able I will save a bunch in gas & drive far fewer miles too.

I get in the 11-12 mpg range without driving that hard (2,500 rpm acceleration from stops) so yours is good.

I usually do between 12 to 13 mpg within the city. I dont travel much and the highest i have done is 14mpg within the city.

18 mpg for city driving with the V8 is very good.

Do you calculate your MPG with every fill-up and compare it to the computer MPG? I do.
The variance between the two numbers is always higher when it comes to the computer's number.
With my 4Runnner that variance is not predictable (ie always XX MPG higher) as it is anywhere between 12-20%.
For me a computer reading of 20.1 could be a calculated reading of anywhere from 16.08 to 17.69.

I guess your 4Runner's computer is more predictable with this variance. Wish mine was more like yours.

I just bought my 06' 4runner SE V6 a couple of weeks ago, now after two full tanks, I'm averaging approx. 21 mpg of mixed city/highway (70/30). I can't believe how fuel efficient T4R's are.... My first full tank got about 380 miles w/18 gal and my second tank was 390 miles w/19 gal. Both times I reset the mpg calculator and they read, 21.8 1st tank and 22.3 2nd tank. So i guess the computer is slightly optimistic.....

Yeah, your real MPG is roughly 2 MPG less than the computer says, so you're looking at 19-20MPG on average, which is still good.

Man! I tried for 3 years to get mileage like that. I never got less than 15 around town, never more than 18.5 highway@70. Usually combined was 16.5 maybe 17 if I was good.

I even changed to a V6. Now I get 18-19 same driving and 20-21 on highway trips.
Its just amazing some of the V8 numbers posted here. Mine must have liked gas more and my driving more aggressive that an 80 year old in a K-car! But I still couldn't find anything better so I went with a V6 and will deal with it!

same here! my driving now is 50/50 highway + city. the readout says about 17.1mpg. when i've done the gas vs mileage it equals to 15.X mpg.

on longer, highway trips i got 18mpg going roughly 75mph.

i drove the Patfinder to MD this week for a 3-day business meeting and i got 18.3mpg. very surprised considering the size of the engine and the fact i was going 72-80mph the entire time. thankfully, the mileage gauge was pretty accurate saying i was getting 18.1mpg.

with the 50/50 driving i usually get 14-15mpg but i drive her pretty hard.

You can tell by his post that he calculated by hand. 21.8 and 22.3 does not average 21. He even commented about the computer being optimistic.
He's getting 21 mpg thus far.......

Did you find your mileage to get better with a few miles on the clock? Im at 2600 miles, hoping itll get a little better towards the 5000 mark.

V8's are all fulltime 4wd. My drive is on city streets but mostly timed, one way, so you can hold a pretty consistant 35-40mph without a lot of stops and starts. If you go too fast you have to stop so you learn to time it. SEEMS to be the optimum situation for mpg with this vehicle.

PS - I always do the math in my head for some practice, I refigured it using gas and dollars to the .xx and came up with 17.8
Yes I check every tank and yes that was the best by 1.0 mpg.
Don't think I floored it that whole tank.
But neither did I granny it. I stayed with traffic, just gently off the line.

I've been at 17.2 city/rural with heavy aggressive driving. My onboard is is pretty damn accurate . Never reads that high. .2 high , which is close enough for me to call accurate . ( also not figuring in the add'l miles traveled for bigger tires ) would probably put it right where it's supposed to be.

Also this is running summer blend fuel now , in winter it drops about 2 mpg depending on how cold it is and how long if any warm up's , idling , ect....

For a full time 4wheel drive running 265/70/17 tires (Revos) and a V8 I'm very happy. (until I fill up at the pump) $$$$$$$$.....lol
